The


Environment Agency has recently detected


a large increase in pollution of water


by diuron - this is only used in the amenity sector





         


SDebate has been tested


• All users, distributors and advisers, are continually trained and hold certificates of competence


• The application of


pesticides is minimised (or, if necessary, prohibited) along roads, very permeable surfaces or other infrastructure close to surface or groundwater or where there is a risk of run- off to water or sewage systems


• The use of pesticides is minimised or prohibited in areas used by the general public, such as parks, public gardens, playgrounds, sports and school grounds.


The legislation is currently being discussed in Brussels. It is possible that the new law will be agreed by the end of the year.


The UK Government also attaches great importance to


promoting best practice. DEFRA’s national strategy for pesticides identifies the need for improving practice in the amenity sector as a key goal. Government and industry representatives are working together on an ‘action plan’ to develop a range of measures that will achieve this.
