The Scented Garden

Many of us enjoy gardening and the scent of a garden is just as important as colour, form and variety. Side View magazine asked TV presenter Charlie Dimmock to share her favourite scented plant ideas to help create a sensory garden for all to enjoy. Shrubs form the backbone of many planting schemes, those with fragrant fl owers include the powerfully heady Daphne “Somerset”, with pink buds opening to blush-white in May. Charlie also recommends two mock oranges: Pittosporum tobira and Philadelphus “Belle Etoile”. P. tobria is a tender evergreen grown for its fragrant star-shaped white fl owers in late spring/early summer. P. “Belle Etoile” is a sun-loving shrub which fl owers profusely with large white fl owers with pale purple centres. Perennials also add fragrance to borders. Dianthus “Doris” is a modern pink with scented, pale pink fl owers which bloom all summer. Hosta “Honeybells” adds height to foliage displays, with large oval leaves complemented in mid- summer by bell-shaped white fl owers streaked with lavender.
