as a barbecue prepared by Burns to thank her neighbors and friends for their help in cultivating her lavender. “That first year we harvested, everyone was having such a good time harvesting lavender that when we ran out of places to put it or hang it up - we had to make them stop! No one wanted to stop working!” The event has evolved in size, allowing for anyone who wishes to partake in the excitement of the lavender harvest. At- tendees may harvest lavender, learn how to bundle it and hang it to dry, and learn how to grow and use the herb. The harvest is now in its fourth year. Burns says the consistent success of the event has been an inspiration on all sides. “That’s such a great reward, not only to have help with the harvest, but also to see people getting so much pleasure out of helping.” The pleasure and peace of working with nature is a value
that Burns knows deeply. She grew up in a less-developed area in Miami, where nature was her backyard. “I really didn’t realize until I was older how unusual it was to be able to just walk out of your house, pick something off a tree or bush, and eat it. Today, fewer and fewer people experience the simple act of standing in the sunshine biting into a warm, sun-ripened tomato just taken from the plant, feeling its juices fill their hand.” Burns hopes that together, people who care about the earth
and natural farming can pass on these values to future genera- tions. “I hope that we small farmers will continue to share what we know and love, to share it with the community and anyone who is interested. I hope that putting children in contact with things they might not otherwise experience will influence their appreciation of the environment later on in life.”
