2008, SAS completed a 1-megawatt solar farm – one of the largest solar projects in North Carolina. Last May, Governor Bev Perdue held a press conference at the SAS solar farm to announce a package of energy reforms and initiatives. SAS has also installed a solar thermal hot water system, regenerative drive eleva-

tors, water and waste conservation projects, active employee engagement efforts, and has several LEED-certified and energy-efficient buildings on its campus in Cary. Covering five acres, the 1-megawatt photovoltaic (PV) solar array was designed
and installed by SunPower Corporation and Southern Energy Management and is esti- mated to generate 1.7 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,600 tons annually. This is equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions from the consumption of more than 167,000 gallons of gasoline. SAS has now announced plans to develop a second 1.2 megawatt solar farm
on its campus, which would add an additional 5,200 photovoltaic panels, covering about seven acres near its existing solar farm off Trenton Road.
