Makes Social Networking a Greener Way to Connect
No trees were destroyed in the making of these business cards… they’re digital!
alled Poken™, these new electronic social media devices, already popu- lar in Europe and Asia, represent the
next generation in business and social networking. You meet someone, touch your Poken together, and contact infor- mation is mutually transmitted via short range wireless - a green glow indicates a successful transfer. Later, at your computer, you plug
in your Poken using a standard USB port and the new contact’s information appears on the screen, including their web address, social media sites, videos and photo. If they change a website, a phone number, a job, or their photo, you get the update automatically – and without an annoying announcement e-mail. The web-based system also re- cords a timeline of when contacts were made, making Poken more enjoyable and practical than a desk drawer full of aging business cards! Success coach Martin Brossman,
a trainer who offers courses in maxi- mizing the benefits of Social Media,
believes Poken should be on everyone’s keychain. “I believe the Poken is going to be an important business tool. It is fun to use and it provides the perfect interface between on-line business networking and in-person networking,” Brossman said. “It’s a dynamic busi- ness card that always stays up-to-date. You can add active hyperlinks to your Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin sites, as well as your websites, phone, ad- dress - whatever you want to include in your personal website at the Poken Hub at
www.poken.com . The Hub is where you maintain all your contact data. Since it is web-based, you can view and update it from remote com- puters. The hosting of your site is a free service that comes with the purchase of a Poken.” The Poken trend has been growing
in the Triangle. If you attend an in- person networking event you’re likely to see the pale green glow of Poken making connections. “People are enthusiastic about connecting to new
contacts and even about re-connecting to business people they already know,” Brossman added. “They are obviously enjoying the novelty of an electronic business card. Let’s face it, few people are excited to get your paper business card - they are excited to see all your links on their computer screen. It’s visu- ally interesting, especially when Poken owners post extra links to photos or video on their Poken site.” There are two basic Poken designs: a 2-Gig Flash Drive (Poken PLUS™) or a keychain-ready cartoon charac- ter without added memory (Poken SPARK™). Poken range in price from $20 to $35 and can be ordered online from
www.PokenZoo.com . You can also find them at Affordable Chic in Raleigh and the BNC Center in Cary. Learn more about how to choose and use Poken at
