Florida Yoga Institute to Host Meditation Primer
T
ools that can help restore calm and clarity to better deal with the pressures of everyday
living are the focus of Turn Down Your Mind’s Volume, an eight-week meditation program of- fered by the Florida Yoga Institute, in Estero. The sessions will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., beginning on June 17. Each session will start with 20 minutes of
gentle stretching and breath work, followed by a 30-minute engaging talk about the Buddha’s 12 key principal teachings, known as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. They will end with a meditation experience as participants learn and practice simple, well-known techniques such as breath awareness, body scanning (also known as Insight meditation), and Lovingkindness. Each evening includes time for questions and answers. The program is designed for those who want to learn how to meditate and un-
derstand the philosophy behind the practice. It is also well suited for experienced meditators wishing to deepen their practice and appreciation. Every participant will receive comprehensive resources to support their home practice, including reading materials and a meditation CD recorded by Institute founder Francesca Vanegas. “We live very noisy lives in our head,” says Vanegas, who studied with Hyon
Gak Sunim at the Kwan Um Zen center in Providence, Rhode Island, and is a dedi- cated student of Vipassana meditation. “Meditation helps strengthen the muscles of attention, so we can draw our body-mind back to the life we have, rather than the life we wish we had.”
Cost: $197 for entire program. Location: 9480 Corkscrew Palms Circle, Ste. 6. To register or for more info, call 239-498-0222 or visit
