Therapy on the Gulf, chose a “wait and watch” option rather than surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or seed plantings. “I chose to wait because most prostate tumors are slow-growing. I wanted time for extensive research on all my options and their side effects, and on reliable alternatives,” says Hansen. He highly recommends two resources he used to design the year- long program that reduced his PSA level to less than 1: Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer, a book by Dr. Patrick Walsh, a well-known surgeon at John Hopkins University School of Medi- cine; and Jeff Primack’s Food Healing:
Conquering Any Disease DVD and
manual.
Hansen’s research also led him to a second urologist, who was willing to provide in-depth education on various treatments and to monitor PSA levels throughout his journey back to health. Due to severe urinary problems and urinary tract infections, Hansen took Flomax and Avodart for six months. “The Avodart was supposed to shrink the prostate, but it didn’t,” he advises, “and there were some sexual side ef- fects, which was the reason I decided to stop taking the drugs and have a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), a surgical procedure that opens the urethra and relieves the holding of urine in the bladder.”
After studying various raw foods suggested to reduce cancer cells and bolster the immune system, Hansen in- corporated them into his diet: red beets, red reishi mushroom extract, red rasp- berry powder, raspberries, strawberries, pomegranates (seeds and white core),
“Given the proper support and a better lifestyle, the body’s own ability to repair itself could prevent cancer in the vast majority of cases.” ~ F.A.C.T.
apples (core and seeds), avocado seed, goji berries, pineapples (core and stem), limes, grapefruit, acai berries, blue- berries, carrots, cucumbers, broccoli (particularly the stems) and maca root powder. He also included herbs—basil, garlic, ginger, mint, cilantro, turmeric and rosemary—and a daily probiotic. “Blending fruits and vegetables into smoothies and consuming 20 to 40 ounces a day helped me alkalinize my pH and boost my energy levels,” notes Hansen.
Jim Occhiogrosso
Neither Long nor Jim Occhiogrosso, an Estero resident and natural health practitioner who offers consulta- tions, ever con- firmed their
urologist’s cancer
diagnosis with a biopsy. “I didn’t panic and have the biopsy and surgical removal,” says Occhiogrosso, who references his favorite quote by Dr. Bernard Jensen [1908-2001], author of
The Chemistry of Man: “There is much
being done in the healing arts today which coerces patients into doing what they should through fear.”
Opposed to causing further dam- age and urinating blood for months af- ter the invasive biopsy that generally re- quires 12 to 24 samples, Occhiogrosso explains, “I believed that removing the tumor wouldn’t eliminate the primary conditions that caused the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells in my body.” Using extensive exploration of information available on natural health remedies and acting as his own re- search subject, Occhiogrosso changed his eating habits, tried various herbs and nutrients he believed would help his condition, and kept a diary of his experience. “The good science I found on the causes and natural solutions for common prostate problems is in my
book, Your Prostate, Your Libido, Your
Life, offered on my website,” states Occhiogrosso, whose findings led him to conclude that many chronic dis- eases, including cancer, “…result from a failure of your immune system,” he explains. “Your body is always produc-
ing cancer cells and a healthy immune system detects these wayward cells and destroys them before they can do seri- ous damage.”
To rally his immune system, Oc- chiogrosso took high-quality multi- vitamins in addition to vitamins D3
,
C and full-spectrum E in its natural, all eight fractions form. He also took Serenoa repens, or saw palmetto, an herb that has proven value for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH); Pygeum africanum, the bark of the African plum tree, traditionally used for the treatment of urinary and prostate problems; and Swedish Flower Pollen, a concentrated, allergen-free extract of the male seeds of ryegrass and various other flowering plants. Commercial flower pollen ex- tracts, well studied in Europe, are now beginning to appear in the U.S. Occhiogrosso, like F.A.C.T., be- lieves that many risk factors for various cancers can be modified and reduced by changes in lifestyle and nutrition; intelligent natural hormonal balancing; and proper vitamin, mineral and herbal supplementation.
The more we continue to study the complexities of the human body, the more we recognize its miraculous abil- ity to rebound and heal, given the right conditions. Perhaps the experiences of Dina, Hansen and Occhiogrosso, as well as the guiding principles of F.A.C.T., can serve as rays of hope for cancer patients seeking non-toxic, non- invasive, viable alternatives that can help them reclaim vibrant health.
