SMITHS

OF NEWENT EST 1866

Right: among the exhibitors who, after many years at Olympia, opted for the Penman alternative this summer are Cumbrian period furniture specialists Anthemion who ask £16,500 at Kensington Town Hall for this c.1690 oyster veneered walnut chest of drawers.

Olympia refuseniks see Penman gamble pay off

OVER the years, Sussex organiser Caroline Penman has sprung a good many surprises on the fairs world, not least with her London fairs. And just before last Christmas she did it again when she surprised everyone by throwing her hat in the already crowded

ring and announced The West London Art

& Antiques Fairto be held from June 3 to 6 this this year at Kensington Town Hall, W8.

Some thought this a risky proposition

but Caroline was convinced that with all the talk of grand, top quality and not inexpensive (stands or stock) London fairs there was room for a broader based fixture with prices to suit every pocket – literally from £50 to £50,000. Stand prices could also accommodate

the growing band of dealers nationwide who could not afford the stand rents at the other London fairs, especially disgruntled Olympia dealers who just could not cope with the price hike imposed by David Lester when he took over.

And at the time a number of the more

modest dealers felt they were not really in Mr Lester’s plans for the future of his new-look Olympia.

Whatever her inspiration, Caroline

Penman’s foresight was spot-on and on June 3, Olympia preview day, she will host 52 exhibitors at the town hall, and a good list they are with well known names from the quality fairs circuit and a good range of specialists.

And going head to head with Olympia worked. Of the 52 in Kensington some 40 are ex-Olympians and nearly 30 were at Olympia last June but this time chose a more reasonably priced option, where they were assured of a welcome. Did the canny organiser really spot a gap in the summer market with, for various reasons, Olympia losing a good number of its regulars? All she said last week was “My hunch has paid off.” This is not to say, of course, that Olympia will be a damp squib. With 157 exhibitors it promises to be the varied and surprising show we look forward to – and always a talking point. More on Olmpia in next week’s Diary.

Left: there are treasures

galore in Sam Fogg’s

sculpture exhibition but the most imposing is this massive Romanesque 12th century stone font, 4ft 7in (1.40m) long, which costs in the region of £250,000.
