OUR STORY

The Weirs Times was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert. The newspaper, then named Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette, was published until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902.

One of the most remarkable features of the publication was a map of Lake Winnipesaukee which occupied the center spread of the paper. Readers will find the same map reprinted on the center pages of this, and every issue.

The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and vicinity.

GOOD STUFF

Locally owned for over 17 years, this publication is devoted to printing the stories of the people and places that make New Hampshire the best place in the world to live. No, none of the daily grind news will be found in these pages, just the good stuff.

30,000 copies are distributed every week in the Lakes Region/Concord area. 15,000 delivered to

Confused

To The Editor: I’m a voter from New Hampshire’s first district. I recently attended a

Town Hall meeting in Carol Shea-Porter’s state office. I was pleased to see tables with free copies of the Con- stitution.

Naturally, I took one. I asked her to show me the

part where the Constitution gives Washington authority to take over private health care. She didn’t answer. Instead, she commented that if we followed the Con- stitution, we wouldn’t have Social Security, Medicare, roads, etc. I never thought of that

but must admit this left me a bit confused. I’m hoping she can clear it up. I figure there must be two possi- bilities. Either we’ve done away with the Constitution entirely, or we get to pick and choose … sort of like a Chinese restaurant menu. Is that the case? Does this mean the Unit-

ed States is no longer a constitutional republic? If so, when did it happen? It seems that such a story would have been on the news. After all, the Con- stitution has been the law of the land for over two hundred years. Does Ms. Shea-Porter have refer- ences to articles or docu- ments? Pointing them out

would be a great constitu- ent service. By the way… if we’re no

longer a constitutional re- public, why did she take the oath of office? Seems like a bother. What with all the important legislation that needs to get done, it’s just another thing to do. Of course I don’t know what goes on in Washington. That’s why I have represen- tatives. The other possibility is

that we get to choose the parts of the Constitution that we like and ignore those parts we don’t. For example, the part where Ms. Shea-Porter goes to Washington and makes laws the rest of us have to obey… that’s a good part. We can keep that. On the other hand, the

part in Article 1, Section 8, … you know… where it says Congress can only make laws it’s authorized to make. That’s a pain. We can ignore that. It stops the folks in Washington from passing some really great laws. The same thing holds for

that pesky tenth amend- ment. Remember that one? (It’s the last amendment in the Bill of Rights.) It for- bids Congress from pass- ing laws not enumerated in Article 1, Section 8. It reserves everything else for the states and for the

people. It has to go! How can Ms. Shea-Porter

and Congress do the im- portant work of governing the people if the Constitu- tion stands in the way? It must be so frustrating. There are so many laws and regulations to pass… so much good to do and so little time. I have to admit though,

I can’t understand why she passes out copies of the Constitution. It’s over two hundred years old! The world is much differ- ent now. The Constitution can’t possibly be relevant to modern life. Yeah, yeah, I know that

back then citizens were abused by those in pow- er, but that was long ago. Things are different now… we’re enlightened. Surely human nature has pro- gressed so that citizens no longer need protection against the excesses of those in power. I know we still read

Shakespeare because he explores eternal truths about human nature… power, love, hate, revenge… all those things that keep popping up generation after generation. Great literature teaches that human nature never changes, but this is different… this is politics! Our representatives have good intentions. Yeah, the Constitution

is based on silly, archaic beliefs. It assumes citizens have a right to spend their own money on themselves and their families rather than have it spent for them by government. It assumes that free citizens should make their own decisions about their lives rather than have them made by Congress. Now how can you govern the little people if you follow silly notions like that? So, I’m afraid I’m really

confused and as one of Ms. Shea-Porter’s constitu- ents, I’d like her to explain how our government really

works. I’m sure many in her district would be fas- cinated by the answers. I know I would.

How About Some Common Sense

To The Editor: The State of NH is fac-

ing an $84 million deficit this year and I have to ask myself why! Since 2006 we have, with a democratic majority in the House, had over 50 new or increased fees/taxes inflicted upon us, and yet the State is still in the red! Now our Governor is look-

ing at borrowing money to pay our operating expenses. That is the equivalent of my refinancing my home and using the extra taken out to pay my phone bills or my car payments, etc. Eventu- ally that money dries up and I still have not learned how to reduce my personal expenses for the day when I have no other well to draw from. Or the other scenario is that I take out a new credit card and max it out with grocery and phone bills, etc. At the end of the day I am now paying on a new debt at, say 18%, for months if not years while the benefit received may have happened years ago! Either way it is not pretty! Surely with over 60 State

departments someone could do a little research to determine what programs could be reduced or elimi- nated. How many times does the State have to keep dipping in to the well (aka the taxpayers pocket) before we say “enough all ready?” Let’s try some common sense for a change, eh?
