Genealogy Expert Speaks In Franklin

The Franklin Historical Society proudly presents Donna

Hague Blinn, the Founder of Heritage, a family genealogy research firm, as well as an approved Researcher for Ances- try.com and listed on their Expert Connect program, who will be speaking to our members and guests on Thursday evening, May 6th, 7pm at the Webster/Tay House, 21 Holy Cross Road (at Webster Place, off Route 3, three miles south of the intersection of Routes 3, 3A, 127, and 11 in Franklin). The evening will be a journey to simplify and identify a

path for you to pursue in discovering your roots through genealogical research. Not everyone descends from Kings and Queens; however, one’s family is no less important. Everyone can hold pride in their Family Heritage regardless of where it all started. Donna will explain the joys, humor and frustrations of seeking the true family history and the adventure & intrigue of what exploring your family history can mean to you. The event is free, and light refreshments will be served

after the talk and before the business meeting, to which all who attend are invited. Additional information about upcoming events is available on the Society’s web page at www.histsoc.org/NH/FHS.

History of the Laconia State School

On Monday May 10, Laconia Historical & Museum Soci-

ety will premier the documentary film “Lost in Laconia,” a history of the Laconia State School, at the Laconia Middle School auditorium at 7pm. In 1901 The NH Legislature passed an act to establish a

home for ―feebleminded children, wherein sixty children living in almshouses throughout the state were admitted. This one hour documentary was made using interviews with former residents of the institution, parents and people who worked there along with old film footage and an extensive collection of photos and newspaper clippings. The film traces the history of the New Hampshire School for the Feebleminded, later renamed the Laconia State School from its initial beginnings in the early 1900s until its closure in 1991. The purpose of this film project is to examine the so- cial values and cultural ideals of the 20th century, relative to individuals and families who were labeled feebleminded, deficient, or disabled. Thousands of children and adults were institutionalized in large, state operated institutions throughout the country, and in the case of New Hampshire, at the Laconia State School. Sponsored in part by Stafford Construction. For tickets contact Laconia Historical at 527-1278 or visit the Laconia Public Library. Admission $5 (funds go to support Laconia Historical programs and exhibitions).

at 7pm. Plenty of parking is available and refreshments will be served. The Historical Society Museum at 49 Main Street will be

open after the program for those who wish to view the Civil War exhibit featuring items that belonged to Cpl. Henry M. Sanborn, 14ht Reg. Co. H.
