SOWELL from 9

it is that they eventually turned against slavery, and stamped it out, at a time when non-West- ern societies around the world were still maintain- ing slavery and resisting Western pressures to end slavery, including in some cases armed resistance. Only the fact that the

West had more firepower than others put an end to slavery in many non- Western societies during the age of Western imperi- alism. Yet today there are Americans who have gone to Africa to apologize for slavery-- on a continent where slavery has still not been completely ended, to this very moment. It is not just the history

of slavery that gets dis- torted beyond recognition by the selective filtering of facts. Those who go back to mine history, in order to find everything they can to undermine Ameri- can society or Western

civilization, have very little interest in the Bataan death march, the atroci- ties of the Ottoman Em- pire or similar atrocities in other times and places. Those who mine history

for sins are not searching for truth but for opportu- nities to denigrate their own society, or for griev- ances that can be cashed in today, at the expense of people who were not even born when the sins of the past were committed. An ancient adage says:

“Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.” But ap- parently that is not suf- ficient for many among our educators, the intelli- gentsia or the media. They are busy poisoning the present by the way they present the past.

now using her new tax- payer-funded position not only to tell folks how they should eat, but also which “good” restaurants and groceries should be built in their neighborhoods. If there were any doubts left about the Obamas’ ideological commitment to wealth redistribution and a command-and-control economy, those doubts have been thoroughly re-

designed by the founders to stand the test of time, and it has. Its unique- ness lies in its focus of the rule of law rather than the rule of leaders or chang- ing cultural norms. The socialist wants to create a second bill of rights, and suppress the first because the first, particularly free- dom of religion, speech and assembly, evolved to support the unalienable God given rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of

to ask many moderate Democrats in swing dis- tricts to lose their career so that Obama can “get something (no matter if it’s right) done” on health care. In doing so, the Demo-

cratic President, Speaker of the House, and Senate Majority Leader are tak- ing their party down a pathway toward electoral decimation this fall. And they don’t seem to care. They believe that this is what they were meant to do when they got in office: overhaul the health care system. There is no doubt the system needs to be reformed, but it would be better to be reformed step-by-step and not by raising taxes in the mid- dle of a recession or rais- ing the deficit in a time of massive public debt. What is worse is that

they seem to not get that the voters are upset with the process of trying to pass this bill. The process has not been just the tra- ditional deal making and compromises that typical- ly highlight bills’ passage in legislatures. These are

not compromises over policy, but special deals to “buy” the votes of those wary to vote for the bill. Whether it was Sena- tor Ben Nelson’s deal for Medicaid funding in just his state of Nebraska or Mary Landrieu’s kickback for Medicaid funding in Louisiana or the special exemption of unionized workers from taxes on “Cadillac” health plans, these deals reek of brib- ery—it is corruption plain and simple. These deals had to be made to pass a bill that cannot pass on its merits. That fact out- rages voters. The voters do not un- derstand why this par- ticular bill HAS to be passed or else, as Obama is essentially arguing. In addition, most voters, including many Demo- crats, do not understand why the President and his Congressional allies have focused so heavily on health care while not fo- cusing that much on job creation and the economy as a whole. That was the definition of their man- date in 2008, but they seem blinded to that fact

by their ideological drive for universal health care that the Left has wanted for decades. In doing so, they have lost the inde- pendents that voted for them in ’06 and ’08 to the GOP. Ted Kennedy’s old Senate Seat fell to Repub- lican Scott Brown who ran to be the 41st vote against Obama Care. Most non-partisan ana-

lysts see huge Republican pickups this fall, perhaps with the Democrats losing one or even both houses of Congress, a stunner considering how large their majorities are in both chambers. Many key Democrats are retiring or not running for re-election this fall, from moderate Democratic Senator Evan

We have a com- mander-in-chief who pre- sumes to know when you have earned “enough,” who believes that only those who provide what he deems “good” products and services should “keep on making it,” and who has determined that the role of American entrepreneurs is not to pursue their own self-interest, but to fulfill their “core” responsibility as dutiful growers of the

happiness as stated in the Declaration of Indepen- dence. Since these are God given rights, they are supposed to be relatively immune from the dictates of men. A second bill of rights, on the other hand, is delivered at the whim and whimsy of the political class. It is also no surprise that individual property rights are under attack on the basis that the col- lective benefits outweigh individual interests. “One f inal thought.

Senator Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas is trying to distance herself as far away from the Obama/ Pelosi/Reid agenda as much as she can to save her seat, which most peo- ple expect her to still lose. Democratic Sena- tors are in trouble from Pennsylvania to Illinois to Colorado and Nevada, all states that Democrats won handily in 2008. The fact that the Democrats keeping chasing after this rabbit trail of health care shows how pol itical ly tone-deaf they really are. Should they lose both houses of Congress this
