technology continues to make advances in resi- dential house construc- tion. Over the past couple of years I have increasing- ly seen more homes sided with a new green product known as Zip System wall sheathing. Manufactured by Huber Engineered Woods, Zip System wall sheathing offers a number of advantages over the tra- ditional method of apply- ing a separate housewrap over the exterior plywood or Oriented Strand Board (OSB) sheathing. Zip System wall sheaath-

ing is an alternative to water resistance barriers such as Dupont’s Tyvek housewrap. With Zip Sys- tem wall sheathing the water resistance barrier is an integral part of the sheathing, thus eliminat- ing the need to wrap the house in a water resistant

barrier after sheathing the home. By integrating the water resistance barrier into the sheathing, Zip

System wall sheathing saves on material and la- bor costs. It is also rated as an Eco-

friendly building product, as it is constructed us- ing younger and small- er trees that are easier to replenish. Zip System wall sheathing has also achieved National Green Building Certification from the National Association

of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center. In addition to its overall

cost savings and its Green certification, Zip system wall sheathing is also less susceptible to wind dam- age that can often occur with a traditional house- wrap water barrier that is stapled onto the exterior sheathing.

Zip System Wall Sheathing Cons

Zip system wall sheath-

ing is constructed out of oriented strand board (OSB) and a protective water shield coating that is adhered to its outer surface. After fastening Zip system wall sheath- ing to the wall studs, the seams must be properly taped to create a complete water tight seal. As with any type of OSB

material, if water hits it the OSB will begin to de- laminate and swell. So it is important to keep Zip System wall sheathing dry prior to installation and to seal the seams immedi- ately after fastening it to the exterior wall studs. Zip system wall sheath- ing provides just 90 days
