KEEPING EACH OTHER WELL
HEALTH CARE REFORM THROUGH EXERCISE

What’s the big deal about exercise? For start- ers: you can’t lose weight, maintain regularity, think clearly, remain flexible, build immunity, breathe well, see well, hear well, smell well, keep your taste buds acute and discrimi- nating, and more…, with- out exercise. The simple act of get-
ting our heart rate up to the point where we can feel the blood pulsat- ing through our bodies is probably one of the kindest things we can do for ourselves. Otherwise we become like a clogged drain that gradually stops the whole kitchen from being able to function well. We have to find a plumber to, hopefully, get things working again. Easy to see in the kitch-
en; not so easy to see in ourselves. Every system in our body needs exer- cise to function well. Full breaths allow our lungs to expand and bring plenty of oxygen to our blood. Full breaths enable food to be digested and passed through our intestines, to our organs and out to every tissue. Exercise tones our muscles, helps us eliminate wastes eas- ily and keeps our joints open. One of the most satisfy-
ing experiences I’ve had was teaching yoga at a Senior Housing Complex. The building was perched

on a hill just above town and many of the residents could not make it up and down the hill to shop or take a walk. A small group of committed residents signed up to see what yoga practice could do for them and all wound up eventually being able to walk up and down the hill with ease, proving that it’s never too late to reclaim flexibility if one is willing to learn to breathe fully and do gentle stretching daily. Exercise is easier for
those of us who can walk and run but witness the fitness of people who are dealing with paraplegia or missing limbs. They’re figuring out ways to par- ticipate in competitive
sports, climb mountains, ski, and generally lead inspiring lives. The rule is: keep moving whatever you can keep moving and never give up if you want to enjoy good health.
