First Annual Author Symposium:
Bernie Siegel & Donna Jackson Nakazawa To Speak
“23.5 million Americans - that's one in twelve - suffer from autoimmune disease, making it more prevalent than cancer or heart disease.”
T
he Lupus Foundation, Connecticut Chapter presents its first annual Author Symposium, featuring Donna Jackson Nakazawa, author
of the Autoimmune Epidemic, and Bernie Siegel, author of "Faith, Hope and Healing", Dr. Joseph Craft, Wendy Battles, on February
6, 2010 from 10AM to 4PM at 545 Long Wharf Drive, New Haven, Connecticut. According to Nakazawa, “autogens” – chemical,
lifestyle, and other triggers of autoimmune disease -- are wreaking havoc with the human immune system.”
The mission of the Lupus Foundation, Connecticut Chapter is to find the causes of and cure for lupus and to provide support, services
and hope to all people affected by lupus. Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints,
and/or organs inside the body). Chronic means that the signs and symptoms tend to last longer than six weeks and often for many
years. In lupus, something goes wrong with your immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and
germs ("foreign invaders," like the flu).
If you would like more information about the symposium, please visit our website at www.lupusct.org or contact the office at 860-269-6240.
“Spring into the Garden” with the Connecticut Horticultural Society
L
ong after this year’s challenges in the garden have faded into memory and plants lay dormant under blankets of snow, gardeners
will begin to dream and plan for the next season. The Connecticut Horticultural Society invites people to gain inspiration and
practical gardening ideas by attending a day-long symposium, Spring into the Garden, on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Portland High
School in Portland, Conn.
The keynote speaker is Daniel J. Hinkley of Indianola, Wash., among the premier plantsmen and landscape designers in the coun-
try. Founder of the former Heronswood Nursery, Dan has devoted his life to introducing rare and unusual plants to American garden-
ers, an effort that has led him to the farthest reaches of the globe. Dan will present two talks: “Exclamation, Accentuation & Punctua-
tion: Design Elements in the Garden” and “Structure in the Garden Through Underused Shrubs, Trees & Vines for Zones 5-6.”
Also featured are floral designer William P. Graham III of Salem, Mass., and herb experts Kathy and Jack Donohue of Litchfield,
Conn. Bill, an advocate of the healing qualities of gardening and flower arranging, will use the newest design styles, color trends
and varieties of flowers as he talks about “Creating Unusual Floral Designs.” Kathy and Jack, 2008 inductees into the Herb Society of
America’s Rosemary Circle, will discuss “Incorporating Herbs into Gardens & Landscapes.”
The fee is $80 and includes a bistro lunch, coffee breaks and access to garden vendors.
