AAAS and NSF HBCU-UP National Research Conference Awards Announced

T
he 10th Annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP) National Re-
search Conference was held in Washington, D.C., at the Renaissance Washington DC Hotel, in October 2009.
The conference highlights undergraduate student research and institutional strategies to enhance the quality of
undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and research at HBCUs.

More than 700 participants, including over 400 college and university students attended the conference. Nearly
370 students presented oral or poster presentations that were judged by scientists, engineers, and mathemati-
cians from academia, government, and the private and public sectors. Fifty-three prizes were awarded to students
with exemplary presentations.

The conference is co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) HBCU-UP Program and the American
Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). NSF recognizes and supports the important role that HBCUs
play in increasing the number of underrepresented ethnic minorities that are well prepared for participation and
leadership at every level of education and research in STEM.
