Liberty Tax Service
Founder and CEO
John Hewitt
A man with vision,
a company with heart!
Entrepreneurial visionary is one way to describe John Hewitt, but
it would be equally important to characterize this busy executive as
socially responsible and altruistically driven. Hewitt evokes a much
broader picture than the typical CEO. Integral to his goals is the
delivery of value to his Franchisees and to the communities they
serve. It is this commitment to social service that makes John Hewitt
a giant in the eyes of the many people his efforts have touched
through the years.
Hewitt is a veteran of 41 tax seasons and is lauded as the grandfa-
ther of the tax industry, having founded two of the top three tax
preparation firms, i.e. Liberty Tax Service in 1997 and Jackson
Hewitt Tax Service in 1982. Hewitt has received numerous accolades
including being named the International Franchise Association’s
Entrepreneur of the Year. Liberty Tax Service continues to be the
fastest growing retail tax preparation firm in the industry’s history.
The company will have over 3,700 locations operating in 2010.
Liberty Tax Service is ranked the third best franchise in the January
2009 issue of Entrepreneur magazine’s Franchise 500
®
, the indus-
try’s behemoth of rankings, preceded by McDonalds
®
and Subway
®
.
Liberty Tax Service has a commitment to the communities it
services. The company has created many opportunities to help their
franchisees and employees give back by supporting cause-related
programs such as Cell Phones for Soldiers, March of Dimes and Stop
Hunger Now, an international hunger relief organization which
Hewitt co-founded in 1998.
Hewitt is also very sensitive to the issues concerning minorities
and women. “I have always believed that education provides options,
and options ultimately provide empowerment. That is why I am
pleased to be associated with Black EOE Journal, as our mutual
goals are to connect, educate and promote equal opportunity, thus
creating a more diverse environment. We have always held firm to
the credo that there is a great deal of “Strength in Diversity,” explains
Hewitt.
A large number of successful franchise owners at Liberty Tax
Service are African Americans. Additionally, African Americans hold
many of the key positions throughout the organization. And Liberty
Tax Service was included in the Black EOE Journal’s 2009 Annual
Yearbook, being named a “Best of the Best” in the following catego-
ries: 2009 Top Supplier Diversity Programs for African Americans;
2009 Top Banks, Financial Institutions & Insurance Companies; and
2009 Top Franchise.
It is his enduring spirit to go beyond the norm that drives John
Hewitt each day. With Liberty Tax Service, John Hewitt has success-
fully built a community, not just a company. And, under his leader-
ship, this community is chartered to work for the betterment of local
1-877-285-4237
communities nationwide.
