Junk
defenses
BY JAMES PARINEllA & ERIC zASlOW
HYBRID OR “JUNK” DEFENSES
such as the ClaM are intended
primarily to disrupt the offense’s
rhythm. They combine aspects of
one-on-one defense with zone
to create confusion, take the
offense out of their comfort zone,
and occasionally get a block
during the melee. In this chapter,
we’ll go over zone transition
defenses, the most famous
junk defense (the clam), other
misleading defenses, and how to
use them effectively.

In the late 1980s, many high-level
offenses had devastating set plays off
the pull. Straight one-on-one defenses
couldn’t stop these powerful offenses, and
zone defenses simply allowed them (in
good weather conditions) to march down
the field uncontested. As a counter, transi-
tion defenses arose. “Transition” is simply
