Six: Engineer Commander George Hull, Royal Indian Marine and Royal Canadian Navy

MEDAL; WAR MEDAL 1939-45; JUBILEE 1935, these three unnamed, very fine and better (6) £140-180

George Hull was appointed an Assistant Engineer in the Royal Indian Marine on 12 January 1908 and was advanced to Engineer in
January 1911. The rank was re-designated ‘Engineer Lieutenant’ in 1917, and he was promoted to Engineer Lieutenant Commander in
January 1919. During the Great War he served in Mesopotamia and was mentioned in despatches. He became a Temporary Engineer
Commander in November 1928 when he held the post of Officiating Principal Engineer and Ship Surveyor and Superintending
Engineer to the Government of Burma at Rangoon. Holding the same post, he was confirmed in that rank in June 1930. Hull retired
from the R.I.M. in April 1937. He became a Temporary Lieutenant Commander (Engineer) in the Royal Canadian Navy in June 1940
and was based at Esquimalt, British Columbia.

1914-15 STAR (Pte., 3rd M.R.); BRITISH WAR AND VICTORY MEDALS (184054 Pte. 2, R.A.F.); 1939-45 STAR; AFRICA STAR; WAR AND
AFRICAN SERVICE MEDALS, these four officially named (164795 A. L. Povall) good very fine (6) £70-90
Allon Leslie Povall was born on 16 October 1895. He served with the 3rd (Natal) Mounted Rifles, October 1914-July 1915, and 4th
South African Horse, December 1915-July 1917, serving in the South African Rebellion, October 1914-February 1915, then in German
South West Africa, February 1915-July 1915, and German East Africa, January-December 1916. Posted to Egypt, July 1918-April 1919,
he was commissioned a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant (London Gazette 1 July 1919) and served as a Pilot Officer with the R.A.F. Prior to
the Second World War he was living in Kensington, Johannesburg. In October 1940 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the
General Service Corps, attached Cape Corps. He attained the rank of Temporary Captain in July 1942 and served in North Africa. He
was demobilised in October 1946.

Engine Room Artificer William Charles Duncan, Royal Navy, was killed when the submarine C.33 was lost through unknown causes in
the North Sea on 4/5 August 1915, aged 31 years. His name is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. He was the son of W.
B. and J. Duncan of 2 Henry Street, Rochester, Kent, and husband of Minnie May Morgan (formerly Duncan), of 9 Liss Road, Southsea,
Portsmouth. With copied research.

Sergeant James Fewell, Royal Canadian Regiment, was killed in action on 23 August 1917, aged 30 years. Having no known grave, his
name is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial. He was the son of James Fewell of 43 Nicholas Street, Globe Road, Mile End, London,
and husband of Maria Fewell of 94 Mons Terrace, West Street, Burgess Hill, Sussex.
