Three: Sapper N. H. Coutts, Canadian Engineers, who died of wounds
at Ypres in April 1915
1914-15 STAR (5684 Spr. N. H. Coutts, 1/Can. D.S. Coy.); BRITISH WAR AND
VICTORY MEDALS (5684 Spr. N. H. Coutts, C.E.), together with related
Canadian Memorial Cross, G.V.R. (5648 Spr. N. H. Coutts), with
forwarding card, and a large colour-tinted portrait photograph in
uniform, the whole contained within a gilt display frame, generally
extremely fine (4) £250-300
Norman Hunter Coutts was born in Aberdeenshire in October 1889 and enlisted
in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force direct from the Militia in
September 1914. Subsequently embarked for France in the 1st Canadian
Division’s Signalling Company, he died of wounds at Ypres on 26 April 1915. He
is buried in the Duhallow (Advanced Dressing Station) Cemetery; sold with
copied attestation papers.

Three: Private L. S. Fell, Wiltshire Regiment, who was discharged through wounds in May 1916
1914-15 STAR (11680 Pte. L. S. Fell, Wilts. R.); BRITISH WAR AND VICTORY MEDALS (11680 Pte. L. S. Fell, Wilts. R.), together
with related Silver War Badge, the reverse officially numbered ‘77238’, his regimental cap badge and a Turkish
“Gallipoli Star”, by B.B. & Co., the whole contained in an old fitted glazed case, one or two edge bruises, generally very
fine and better (6) £180-220
Lionel S. Fell, who enlisted in the Wiltshire Regiment in September 1914, first entered the Balkan theatre of war in July 1915 and was
discharged through wounds in May 1916, the number on his Silver War Badge tallying with that on the official roll.

Three: Private J. H. Bennett, 1/7th London Regiment, who was killed in action in August 1918
1914-15 STAR (1721 Pte. J. H. Bennett, 7-Lond. R.); BRITISH WAR AND VICTORY MEDALS (1721 Pte. J. H. Bennett, 7-Lond. R.),
together with related Memorial Plaque (John Henry Bennett), the first polished and with corrosion to reverse, thus fine,
the others good very fine (4) £180-220
John Henry Bennett, who first entered the French theatre of war in March 1915, was killed in action on the Somme on 8 August 1918,
while serving in the 1/7th Battalion, London Regiment. On that date, his unit advanced in a heavy mist to capture Mallard Wood,
amidst much opposition, the start of three days of heavy fighting in which the 1/7th’s casualties totalled 12 officers and 300 other ranks.
Bennett has no known grave and is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial; sold with a full account of the action from the
Battalion’s war diary.

Four: Chief Yeoman of the Signals H. W. Cummings, Royal Navy

R.N.); MESSINA EARTHQUAKE MEDAL 1908, good very fine or better (4) £250-300
Herbert William Cummings was born in Barton-on-Humber, Lincolnshire in September 1881 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd
Class in May 1897. Advanced to Yeoman of the Signals in May 1905, he served in battleship H.M.S. Exmouth from May 1907 to May
1909, in which period he was among those men landed to assist in rescue operations in Messina (Angels in Bluejackets refers). And by
the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he was serving as a recently promoted Chief Yeoman of the Signals in the battle cruiser
Queen Mary, in which capacity he was present in the action in Heligoland Bight and remained employed until early 1915. A brief
foray ashore having followed, Cummings next served in the minelayer Princess Margaret (June to October 1915), and, via a brief
appointment in the battleship Malaya, the Glory (August 1916 to February 1917), prior to returning to a shore appointment at
Portsmouth and being invalided in October 1917; sold with copied service record.
