Congrats Joanna Quarry (mcnutt) on
Joanna McNutt Quarry is a North Bay
entering the north Bay Hall of Fame!
native who demonstrated her athletic talents
in traditional sports before concentrating her
energies on Ultimate Frisbee and helping
Canada win three World Championship
medals. A two time Athlete of the Year at
Chippewa SS, McNutt excelled in alpine skiing,
track and field and basketball.
In 1986 she won double gold at NOSSA
in Slalom and GS skiing before going on
to capture gold in the OFSAA Alpine Giant
Slalom. In 1987 she helped the Scarlet Raiders
win NDA and NOSSA basketball titles and
qualify for OFSAA. That same year, she set
a provincial record in winning the Ontario
Senior Women’s pole vault. 1988 saw McNutt
place ninth in the heptathlon in the Canadian
Junior Track & Field Championships as well as
being awarded with the Fergie Dowdall trophy
as the top female athlete at the NDA track and
field meet.
Ultimate came into her life in 1989, and
the next year she helped start the first local
league. After moving to Ottawa she continued
in the sport (Horizont’elle & Stella) and before
her active career finished in British Columbia,
she had competed in 14 Nationals from
1989 through 2003, as well as five World
Championships, three World Club events and
three Ultimate Players Championships.
Joanna brought an amazing level of
athleticism to women’s competitive Ultimate.
She was not afraid to sacrifice her body for the
disc, laying out for anything, and was a major
defensive and offensive threat as a result.
She was a great team player, an aggressive
competitor and a true believer in the spirit of
the game. Her enthusiasm had no limits and
she was responsible for recruiting countless
women to the sport.
Joanna helped Canada (Vancouver Prime)
win the World Championship in 2000 in
Germany and was on Canadian bronze medal
winning squads in England in 1994 and in
the United States four years later. She was
also on a Canadian team
that finished fourth in
Norway (1990) and
competed in Japan
(1992). Throughout
her career, her natural
athleticism made her
a dynamic force
both offensively
and defensively.
A long time
advocate for
Ultimate she
continues to
recruit and coach in
Bowen Island, B.C.
