1 2 GREECE 1 JAMAICA

ON OUR RADAR

PIPPA JACKS

In case it’s escaped your attention, we’re hosting a rather important sporting event in the UK this summer, and one international tourism organisation is

getting more excited than most. Jamaica Tourist Board has invested

£500,000 in its first major UK TV ad campaign for five years, using “the world’s fastest man” Usain Bolt as its front-man.

The series of three film clips, not yet seen in the UK, will be aired until February 29 on ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. In “Stand Still”, Bolt tries to run around Jamaica but is forced to keep stopping to admire beautiful views around the island, saying if he lived anywhere else, perhaps he could have been a marathon runner. In “Speed”, Bolt circumnavigates the island at warp speed to a soundtrack that gets faster and faster. But my favourite is “Pose” (pictured top

right), in which local Jamaicans adopt Bolt’s famous pose, including school children, cricketers, gardeners, fishermen

and even a raftsman on the Martha Brae river who lifts his bamboo steering pole out of the water and throws it up into the air to emulate the lightening strike. I do hope he didn’t fall in.

St Lucia I was excited to hear that Lionel Richie has been confirmed as the headline act at this year’s St Lucia Jazz Festival. His concert at The O2 arena in 2009 was one of the best I’ve ever been to – if a bit pricey at £90. Tickets to see Richie and other artists on May 13 as part of Jazz cost around £35 and, as Jean-Marc Flambert, UK director of marketing for the St Lucia Tourist Board, points out, “that’s to watch Lionel Richie at sunset, sipping a Chairman’s or a Piton with your picnic, and sharing Lionel with a few thousand people instead of 30,000-40,000 at The O2!”. If you’ve got clients heading out to

St Lucia in April or May, encourage them to tweak their dates so they can take in some of the fun of Jazz Festival, which has events all over the island from April 30 to May 13.

KATHERINE LAWREY

The travel industry seems determined to get me looking silly in a hat on a weekly basis. Last week it was a cowboy hat with

Calgary, this week a chef’s

hat with the Greek National Tourism Organisation.

I donned the hat in the London cookery school L’atelier des Chefs to prepare delicacies such as beetroot salad with garlic and marinated prawns, and fragrant mastic cream with dried fruits, poached pear and pasteli (pictured right). The event, attended by 50 agents, was

branded the Sympossio 3rd Greek Gourmet Touring, and is a partnership between Greek suppliers and tourist boards, which tour Europe to promote Greek gastronomy. Aldemar Hotels, one of the sponsors, prides itself on catering to guests’ culinary needs, and recently launched gluten intolerant menus in its restaurants. The Greek chefs were passionate about their dishes, and the food was so delicious it was worth wearing the hat!
