Europe is a stronghold for spas and has long held the crown for
therapeutic spas, particularly in Italy, Switzerland and Austria.
Cyprus is one of the top destinations for resort spas, including the
award-winning Le Meridien Hotel in Limassol, Cyprus, with its 34
treatment rooms (see How to book it), and the peaceful Anassa;

meanwhile in Greece, Sani Resort is planning a new spa opening at
Sani Beach Club in Halkidiki for 2010. Not often recognised in the
past for its spa offering, Tenerife can now boast the impressive
ESPA at the Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque, which is one of the
largest spas in Europe and one to watch is the spa at the newly-
opened Mandarin Oriental in Barcelona; new spas to look out for
in 2010 include the spa at Hotel Eden Roc opening in April on the
shore of Lake Maggiore in Italy. Even the UK has seen some
significant spa openings this year, including the Dorchester’s chic
spa in London while The Grove in Hertfordshire is wise to the
desire for retreats – a series of Best Life Retreats will take place
January-March from £480 per person including time with Nina
Grunfeld, a life coach.

Where is it: Tucked among snow-capped mountains, with clean,
crisp air and fresh flowing water only an hour from Zurich, Bad
Ragaz (left) is perfect for a full-on health retreat.
What’s it like: Spring 2009 saw the culmination of an ambitious
€100 million refurbishment of the resort which now comprises
two five-star hotels, a Medical Health Centre, the Tamina Therme
thermal spa and the To B. Wellbeing & Spa centre.
Who’s it for: The resort’s medical team have developed a series of
packages specifically suited to target health problems caused by
modern day living, such as weight worries, being over-stressed
and over-worked, sports strains or combating the signs of ageing,
so this is a good one to recommend to those who are serious about
health, or looking for an overhaul.
Wow factor: Among the many treatments are the Tibetan Singing
Bowl Massage – this sound journey involves “singing bowls” of
differing sizes, made of 12 different types of metal, being placed on
the body and made to vibrate by a therapist.
