The Ganges is India’s holy river, a place of
pilgrimage for every Hindu. This autumn an
o
international team travelled the river, 1,566
miles from its source in the Himalayas to its
mouth in the Bay of Bengal. The expedition
team was on the water in rigid inflatable boats
for 12 hours a day, and sleeping in tents by the
riverside – and having the time of their lives.
The aim of the expedition was to improve

awareness, showcase the potential of the
region for sustainable tourism and to
emphasise the need to preserve the unique
biodiversity along the Ganges riverbanks. The
project was led by Swiss adventurer Andy
Leemann, who has previously guided similar
