San Juan Capistrano is a vibrant community rooted in the history of its people. Its earliest residents, members of the Acjachemen tribe still call the region home. San Juan and its residents have borne witness to numerous changes over the past 220 years, from early hunter-gatherer soci- eties to Franciscan priests establish- ing Mission San Juan Capistrano and Mexican independence to California statehood.
The city was incorporated into the County of Orange in 1961. Today, some 35,800 residents live in San Juan. San Juan Capistrano is a general law community governed by ƒ XG GNGEVGF %KV[ %QWPEKN OGODGTU 6JG EQWPEKN OGGVU CV R O VJG ƒ TUV and third Tuesday of each month.
