San Juan Hills Golf Club
San Juan Hills Celebrates 50 Half a century ago, San Juan wel-
comed its first course—the nine-hole San Juan Hills Country Club. Situated along the banks of Horno
Creek and at the base of San Juan’s southern hills, the now named San Juan Hills Golf Club’s growth has paralleled that of San Juan Capistrano’s evolu- tion—ever-changing to fit the needs of this close-knit community that has gathered at the clubhouse for 50 years. Opened in 1967, amid the city’s first
wave of Easterly-San Juan expansion, San Juan Hills was among south Orange County’s first golf courses—there are now six courses in the region. A few years later, as homes began springing up around the club, the course was expanded to a full 18 holes. Te course’s early modifications are
something head golf pro Ray Ricardo remembers well. A San Juan Capistrano native, and club employee since 1991, Ricardo has had a front-row seat to both the club’s and city’s transformation. Today, in addition to overseeing the Par 71 championship golf course’s
operations, Ricardo teaches the next generation of golfers on the fairways he’s spent his life teeing off on. Te club, he says, is truly a place for
one and all. “It is a fun course. It is a friendly golf course too,” Ricardo said. “We see a lot of people, a lot of locals here. Tis is their golf course. Tis is their venue.” With one of Orange County’s most
pristine greens, happy hour specials seven days a week at 19 Sports Bar & Grill, live entertainment and a growing list of amusing point-scoring games and nightly contests at the driving range’s Entertainment Center, it’s no wonder San Juan Hills is a local favorite. “Tis is a place to hang out,” Ricardo
added. “You can even come in on your horse.” With equestrian trails running the course’s perimeter, San Juan Hills maintains stables and has discounts for equestrians riding in for lunch, dinner or to hit a bucket of balls. Tis is where San Juan gathers, where
locals celebrate. From weekend wed- dings with first-tee “I Do” exchanges, ro- tary club meetings, holiday parties and a line-up of charity golf tournaments sup- porting veterans and wounded warriors, San Juan Hills is a community staple.
