Arkema’s Rilsan PA11 has connects landfill gas to a local gas
distribution
system at up to 200psi
including landfill gas. In this instance, it needed a three mile pipe that could operate at up to 200psi, to trans- port the methane from the landfill. The pressure requirements exceeded the tolerances of HDPE, leading BRD to use PA11 – as it was more economical than the alternative of steel. The material’s main advantages are the reduced
installation cost and minimal maintenance cost compared to steel. Arkema and BRD estimate capex savings of $95,000/
mile, compared to epoxy-coated steel pipe. From historical data, Arkema estimates maintenance savings of $6,300/mile each year when choosing PA11 over steel. “The PA-11 not only enabled us to meet the delivery
pressure requirements of the local utility, it helped keep our overall capital costs down, which helped maintain the project’s viability,” said Greg Maclean, co-founder of BRD. “The quick installation was icing on the cake.” The material offers higher pressure and temperature
capabilities than HDPE due to its chemical structure. It was approved by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) for use in regulated gas pipelines in December 2008. PHMSA permits the use of PA11 pipe for up to 4in diameter piping and 200psi, although the material can achieve 6in, 250psi with a special waiver. The material also can be used for oilfield applica- tions, including oil/gas gathering and water flow lines at pressures exceeding 300psi.
Extending shelf life UK-based Radius Systems has extended the shelf life of its CleanPipe PE100 pipe. Following additional testing, the company has
doubled the pipe’s shelf life – to one year from manu- facture. The tests were carried out by an independent laboratory and are designed for products used in water distribution systems intended for human consumption,

Systems has doubled the
shelf life of its CleanPipe PE100 pipe
said the company. CleanPipe is Radius’ range of factory-sealed coils designed to remove the pre-chlorination process that is normally carried out by water companies before the pipe is installed – bringing environmental benefits from reduced water wastage, it says. The range is specifically manufactured with factory-
fitted internal electrofusion seals that provide a tamper- proof, airtight solution during the pipe’s period of storage before installation. The recessed electrofusion seals, fitted at both ends of the pipe, enable conventional towing heads to be attached to the pipe when using no-dig installation technologies. The seals remain in place until connection. Tests were undertaken on pipe that had been stored
for one year. Water was introduced into the pipe and analysed using the ‘drinking water suite of analysis’, for taste, odour and microbial growth to confirm that the pipe maintained its sterile properties even after one year of storage. CleanPipe is approved for use in drinking water supply by the relevant UK authorities.
