Corrugators | machinery feature

Corrugated pipe is a familiar sight in sewage and drainage applications – and is a major user of recycled polyethylene in the US. Lou Reade reports

Corrugated pipe puts in a strong performance

The latest corrugation systems are helping pipe manufacturers to make products that are larger, longer-lasting and of higher quality. Unicor of Germany has developed two new die head

systems for extruding multi-layer corrugated pipe and electrical conduit.

SWP 58-2L is a modularly constructed die head for

the production of single- and double-layer electrical conduits – which can be produced with PE/PP/PA and PVC/ABS materials. TWP 90/160/270, for multilayered electrical conduit,

was developed for the production of double wall corrugated pipes – especially those for underground use. The corrugated outer layer is made from two strata, which allows the pipe manufacturer to use recycled granulates while maintaining the colour classifi cation of the pipe types. To accomplish this, a new distribution system was developed – providing a symmetrical pre-distribution, which in turn provides the thinnest cover layers and optimal colour coverage, says Unicor. The new products will sit alongside Unicor’s existing die heads, such as those for producing wastewater and drainage pipes with diameters up to 1800 mm. At the same time, the company’s UC 36 G2 corruga-

tor can be used to manufacture pipes with diameters of 4.8 to 36mm. It can comfortably achieve production speeds of up to 60m/min. The UC 36 has 80 pairs of mould blocks and can produce PVC corrugated pipe (for cable conduit) at throughputs up to 250kg/h.

Unicor has redesigned the mould blocks to further optimise pipe quality. Now, all four external sides of the mould blocks are uniformly cooled, providing uniform internal heat distribution. Adjustments are also unnecessary thanks to a mechanical allocation solution for the mould blocks. The basic version of the UC 36 G2 is equipped with 50

pairs of mould blocks, which can be expanded to 65 or 80 pairs at any time in order to increase production capacity. An optional vacuum can also enhance the production of corrugated pipes for a wide variety of applications.

Changing diameter Olmas of Italy is planning to show three ranges of its corrugators at the forthcoming K2016 exhibition in Germany. Its C2, C3 and C4 series are all aimed at different sized corrugated pipes. The C4 series is for small pipes in the 4-18mm outside diameter
