pipe exceeded the quality of traditional pipeline materials. The biaxial stretching process reinforces the pipe material and improves other properties. For WMD, the higher impact resistance, higher pressure resist- ance, lower installation costs and reduced pressure- loss were the main reasons for choosing PVC-O. Other advantages included the lower metre weight compared to other materials, lack of need for welding and ease of installation.
Although a 315mm pipe would have done the job, WMD chose a 400mm pipe because the higher diameter meant that the energy needed to pump the water was reduced in the long term. The second reason for choosing an oversized pipe was in anticipation of future additional capacity. “Although the potential capacity of the pipeline will
not be fully used now, it will in a couple of years,” says André Nijland, Wavin’s manager for technology licensing in North America and Asia. “As the pipeline has a technical lifetime approaching 100 years, the water company has chosen a more sustainable solution.” Biax pipes can be manufactured in any length, as
manufacturing is done by an in-line continuous extrusion process. This means that tailor-made logistical and installation-friendly solutions can be offered for projects. The main advantage of these long pipes was fast

installation. Although installation costs of PVC-O pipes are amongst the lowest, using longer pipes led to further savings, says Nijland.
Malaysian seals Molecor South East Asia (SEA) has teamed up with Trelleborg to develop a new design of PVC-O pipe and integrated seal for pressurised water networks in Malaysia. Trelleborg’s Forsheda 576 Anger-Lock seal, which is made in Malaysia, will be installed into Molecor Hypro PVC-O pipes with a pressure rating of 16 and 25 bar, and ranging from DN 90mm to 630mm. Compared with

sealing element that is bonded to reinforcing plastic to make a one-piece seal. The soft plastic reinforcement enables easy installation of the seal into the pipe’s socket, either manually or automatically, using special insertion equipment. Martijn Boerma, business development manager for
Trelleborg’s pipe seals operation in the Asia Pacific region, added: “Our F-576 Anger-Lock seals outper- form competitor seals in strength and performance of sealing capability and they also offer a much longer lifetime, making them ideal for use in PVC-O pipes.” The fully retained F-576 has a low jointing force, meaning that it cannot be displaced or lost during stocking transportation and installation. Similarly, it ensures a reliable automatic insertion, unlike other standard rubber seals, says Trelleborg.
