BSEE INSTALLATION NEWS
nternational temperature control specialist, ICS Cool Energy, has installed an innovative ‘life saving’ solution in a hospital as part of BMI Healthcare’s annual £40m facilities maintenance programme. ICS Cool Energy developed and project-managed the full solution from concept to completion. It was vital for the project to deliver a state of the art replacement for a life-expired system, while overcoming a complex series of technical and logistical issues. There were significant challenges in the programme of works to install a high efficiency chiller and bespoke air handling units for two of the hospital’s operating theatres. The compliance included: working around restricted space, bespoke designs, tight timelines, rigorous HTM-03 (Health Technical
I
Memoranda, legislation governing temperature control and air flows in life- critical healthcare environments), minimising downtime and ensuring the continued operation of one of the theatres at all times.
The three air handling units were delivered in flat packs and assembled on site. The energy efficient Aptus chiller was also specified due its ability to deliver low maintenance with high energy efficiency from a compact footprint. The Aptus chiller was bespoke- manufactured to ensure that it met the HTM-03 and the space restrictions. Close controls over temperatures in a life-critical environment were also essential and so a new Trend BMS (building management system) was installed, allowing integration of controls, with intelligent panels placed

in the theatres to allow surgical staff to adjust the temperatures as required. For added reassurance, the system allows remote monitoring 24/7 and BMI Healthcare has also opted for an ICS Cool Energy service contract with the national team of skilled engineers on call round the clock, 365 days a year.
BMI Healthcare Project Manager, Mark Elphick, said: “Operating theatres are one of the most sensitive environments in the hospital so the environment has to be precisely controlled and it’s up to the project team to ensure we deliver that. In turn, this means we need to be confident that our supplier will deliver every step of the way and the fact that the ICS Cool Energy team have proved themselves before, as well as being able to offer a full service contract, is very reassuring.”
Following award of the tender, the ICS Cool Energy team, Sales Director Richard Metcalfe and Project Manager Allan Towns worked closely with Mr Elphick to deliver the phased programme of works over a period of five months. As part of the programme, the redundant equipment was removed, and with the associated pipework and cabling in place, installation speed was optimised. Engineers also worked over the weekend so there was no disruption to the theatre rooms above the plant room.

New lighng controls for listed building
ighting Controls Ltd was chosen for the design and commissioning of a new lighting control system for Grade II listed 55 Colmore Road in the centre of Birmingham.
L
The control system comprises 28 x 8 lighting control modules and emergency monitoring capability, all controlled through the new Lighting Controls Headend software package. UK-based Lighting Controls Ltd manufactures control equipment for commercial and high- end domestic lighting and ancillary systems. No. 55 Colmore Road is an impressive Victorian terrace overlooking Birmingham Cathedral. It has 16,000sq ft of grade A office space over eight floors and was formerly occupied by one of Birmingham’s oldest law firms, Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co. Some £30m is being spent on the current renovation project.
John Hammond, Investment Director at Coleshill-based IM Properties, said: “Our aim is to create an entirely unique proposition within the Birmingham property market, creating a sense of contemporary quality, from the specification of the floorplates and sense of arrival, right down to the internal finishes. 55 Colmore Row has a significant heritage that sets it apart from other office buildings in the area.”

Kentec safeguards Serbian telecoms
T
wenty-six new Telekom Srbija telecommunication facilities, designed to extend the range and quality of the company’s telecom services across Serbia, are being protected by fire safety systems that use Kentec fire alarm control panels.
Telekom Srbija is the leading Serbian telecommunications company headquartered in Belgrade. The company offers a range of fixed-line, mobile, and Internet communication services in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. An on-going project saw the replacement of fire detection systems at more than 30 of the company’s telecommunication sites across the country during 2015. The fire safety systems, all designed and installed by Belgrade Fire & Security specialists TVI d.o.o., are based around Kentec’s Syncro AS Analogue Addressable single loop fire control panels with Argus Altair devices – the precise number being determined by the size of each telecommunication facility location.
Kentec’s ‘open protocol’ Syncro series is recognised as one of the most powerful systems of its type, guaranteeing the highest standards of performance, safety and reliability.

protect advanced mineral paints
owrmatic has supplied two PTUL 35 radiant U-tube heaters to provide temperature control at Keim Mineral Paints’ warehouse in Telford. The units were specified and installed by Lindon Heating and Cooling.
P
Keim Mineral Paints are natural, water-borne silicate paints that produce a micro-porous coating that is both durable and waterproof while allowing the substrate to ‘breathe’. Given the complex formulation of the paints, the environmental conditions in the warehouse are critical to maintaining product quality. However, despite good thermal insulation, warehouse temperatures could fall dramatically in cold winters and the company had been using portable heaters to maintain acceptable temperatures for both staff and products.
Keim Managing Director David Pratt explained: “Keeping temperatures above 0ºC is critical for mineral paints, as once they have frozen they are unusable. The decision to install an internal heating system was an important one, taking into account the size of area and the cost to the business. The installation by Lindon was very straightforward, clean and well controlled.”
The Powrmatic gas-fired radiant heaters have been installed at high level to provide direct heating of key areas of the warehouse while ensuring optimum energy efficiency. Production Manager Kelvin Tanner added: “The system has made a huge difference to the conditions in the warehouse; it’s a much more pleasant area to work in, even on the coldest of days.”
