EXHIBITION PREVIEW FEATURE

Southern manufacturing & electronics 2016

With over 800 companies expected to exhibit, visitors to

this year’s Southern Manufacturing & Electronics will be able to see everything from advanced electronics to precision engineering. The show will take place on Tuesday 9th to Thursday 11th February at FIVE, Farnborough

W

hen it returns to FIVE, Farnborough, for three days this February,

Southern Manufacturing and Electronics will take up 18,000m² of exhibition space, with an ever-growing range of international exhibitors alongside UK engineering specialists. There are, in fact, expected to be over 800 firms present, representing engineering activities comprising of everything from advanced electronics to precision engineering.

SEMINARS Running in two lecture theatres over all three days of the show, visitors are able to see presentations covering an extensive number of business and technical subjects. Highlights of the programme range from the return of Stefan Knox of Bang Creations, while Nick Statham of Fasturns UK looks at the

Tim Scurlock and Barry Byrne; and Nick Wainwright of York EMC reviews the latest EU Directives and their implications, in addition to taking a look at how to make sure your products remain compliant. Take a look at the website for full seminar details. Entry to the seminars is free, but pre-booking is strongly advised.

Seminars are an important part of the event

potential financial savings associated with the Automation of Flexible Manufacturing. In ‘Measure your time’, Ben Murphy discusses energy preservation strategies illustrated with case studies; while 3D printing comes under the spotlight when Sav Jeyendran of Canon UK talks about the options with this rapidly emerging technology. Robin Zhang talks about meeting the legislative requirements for exporting globally, while further advanced manufacturing techniques and materials are examined in An Introduction to 3D Print and Future Applications of Advanced Materials. Other seminars will include Ailsa Kaye

with her Best Practice for World Class Manufacturing. The topics of Lean and 6 Sigma are considered in sessions with

EXHIBITORS The show’s blend of international manufacturers and smaller specialist vendors ensures that visitors will not only see the very latest innovations in production hardware from world-leading firms, but also encounter companies that they would be unlikely to stumble upon otherwise, the organiser explains. Debut exhibitor IPF is one such example. The company specialises in plastics machining and fabrication, including 3D printing. It combines ‘traditional’ machining expertise with the very latest advanced manufacturing capabilities, with its facilities including the largest capacity Polyjet 3D printers in the UK as well as colour 3D printing. Create 3D will feature a Mark One

Brownell will be exhibiting this year

composite 3D printer on its stand, which produces nylon-based parts that can be reinforced with carbon fibre, fibreglass or Kevlar. The printer can also embed other components such as sensors and electronics during the print process. From Italy comes Aavid Thermalloy,

which will be showcasing its range of innovative heat management systems. These include its new intelligent liquid cooling system, HydroSink, which aims to replace existing air cooled systems. Other innovations are the High Density Die Casting (HDDC), a process developed to manufacture near net shape parts with good mechanical and thermal properties. Brownell will show its Versatile

Moisture Adsorbing Polymer (VMAP), a combination of polymers and adsorbent desiccants designed to prevent the deleterious effects of moisture and high humidity, including condensation and corrosion. The polymer can be injection moulded, opening up possibilities in applications such as automotive, industrial control, marine applications and high voltage switch gear, where electronic systems and instruments need protection from the effects of humidity and moisture. There are also no shortage of

major suppliers taking part, offering components and OEM parts for virtually every possible application. Cosel Europe will exhibit its range of power supplies, including a new 700W unit to be introduced at the show. Trans-Tronic will exhibit transformers and wound components for a wide variety of applications. Production equipment is also very

well represented at the show, with everything from the latest machining centres to advanced metrology. Nikon returns to highlight its comprehensive range of measurement solutions. Among its current R&D initiatives, the company is delivering innovative methods of integrating metrology inside robotic production processes – particularly for aircraft structures, composite assemblies and turbine blades. The machinery and tooling area is another popular feature of the show. Major international manufacturers will be offering live demonstrations of their latest products in action. Amada will present its 2,500W Quattro laser,
