SHOCK ABSORBERS PLAY A KEY ROLE IN SUBSEA CONNECTOR DESIGN


Developed by Subsea Technologies (STL), the Xtreme Release (XR) connector was created to remove the challenge of Maximum Riser Disconnect Angle. The connector is based on a face-to-face technology rather than a conventional male-into-female engagement, enabling it to release safely, reliably and repeatedly with up to 100% of maximum bending capacity applied. Other connectors, the company explains, cannot separate with high bending loads applied, so the maximum disconnect angle (and therefore the maximum applied bending load) has to be limited to prevent lock-up. This is important because any floating vessel connected by a riser pipe to a wellhead on the seabed


must be able to disconnect rapidly in the event of a position-keeping emergency, otherwise there is high risk of severe damage to the vessel, catastrophic failure of the riser pipe, severe damage to the wellhead and possibly loss of well containment. Existing Emergency Disconnect Packages (EDPs) have to limit the maximum disconnect angle to prevent


the EDP from ‘locking up'. To maintain this small angle, the distance the vessel can move from the nominal centre position is limited and therefore the crew has only a small window of reaction time to identify a position-keeping failure, close in the well and disconnect from the wellhead. If the crew react too slowly, or problems occur too quickly, it can rapidly reach the point beyond which the riser will not disconnect. Because the XR Connector has no maximum disconnect angle and can release at up to 100% of maximum


bending capacity, there is no risk of it locking up when released under load. This means that vessels can move much further away from the wellhead before disconnecting from the subsea wellhead, and when they do release, the vessel crew can be confident that there is no risk of finding the riser stuck. The connector has therefore greatly improved vessel safety, improved asset protection and improved productivity. The XR Connector also enables vessels to continue operations through more severe weather than previously possible, subject to other components in the riser system having sufficient bending capacity. technology are clamping dogs and, in a controlled or emergency release, significant kinetic energy can be imparted into the dogs. Ace subsea shock absorbers were designed into the assembly to safely absorb this kinetic energy and thus ensure that no damage occurs to the dogs or other equipment during the release.

Originally available in blue and white, igus has now added a black option (B160) to its iglidur tribo-tape range, in response to customer demands. This, the company explains, has proved to be an excellent alternative across many automotive applications. The tribo-tape offers low


friction and noise dampening properties, and will eliminate rattles and squeaks wherever there is a metal to metal or plastic contact. Typical examples include leaf springs, steering columns, seating, window mechanisms and arm rests. Reels of the tape are available in two standard widths of 100/120mm, and with or


without a self-adhesive back. They can, however, be ordered in any width up to and including 500mm. Standard thickness is 0.5mm, without adhesive back, the 500mm width is 1.0mm thick. Custom die cut parts are available, whether as a specially tailored by-the-metre product or freely designed prefabricated parts. From one-offs to high-volumes, igus will produce custom parts according to the requirement.

A BORING HEAD WITH DAMPING TECHNOLOGY


Industrial Tooling Corporation (ITC) has introduced the BIG KAISER EWD Smart Damper, a


precision boring head with patented damping technology. This high-precision tooling system is suitable for improving precision and surface finishes when conducting deep hole boring, the company explains. The device dampens vibration and


reduces chatter in deep-hole finish boring, resulting in better surface finishes and improved material removal rates. It also enables high cutting parameters to be used, improving productivity. Tests have shown that deep holes free of vibration can be bored with dramatic time savings. For example, with a projection length of 410mm working with steel at a cutting speed of 450m/min, a feed rate of 150mm/min can be achieved. As well as the damping features, the EWD Smart Damper is also equipped with the latest digital technology. The tool has a large screen that clearly shows the set diameter to an accuracy of 0.001mm, thus helping to minimise operator errors and remove the need for complicated Vernier markings.

CLAMP ADAPTS TO VIBRATION


New from Elesa, the TLR hook clamp, which is available in steel and stainless steel, incorporates a spring compensation system which adapts to vibration and to movement in doors or lids to maintain a consistent sealing force. These, the company explains, operate with a hook and loop over-centre mechanism which has a maximum working load of 500N. The TLR spring retainers are suitable for panels on specialist vehicles such as emergency service or off-road vehicles, as well as for use on packaged equipment which is subject to movement, re-siting and vibration during operation.
