ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS PRODUCTS A COMPACT YET HIGH
DENSITY POWER SUPPLY New from Astrodyne TDI is a high density open frame AC/DC power supply that provides 400W of regulated power in a 3x5 form factor. The ASM400 series is certified to
IEC60601-1 3rd edition BF isolation as a Class I (grounded) input, with a Class II (non-grounded) input and 2 MOPP option. The power supply has a 5V auxiliary and 12V fan output
with efficiency up to 92% at 230V AC. Features also include a Remote On signal; custom output voltages are available; and it offers high density power up to 19W/in³. According to the company, the power density of the ASM400
series results in a small footprint, enabling its use for powering portable medical equipment and in industrial applications.

DIMMER FOR LED MATRIX DESIGNS
An LED bypass switching device has been introduced by Linear Technology that enables independent dimming and diagnostics of eight individual LEDs or LED segments. The LT3965, which works in conjunction with a LED driver circuit configured as a current source, features eight individually controlled floating 17V/330mΩ NMOS switches. Using these internal power switches and an integrated I2
C serial
interface, individual LEDs within the string can be turned on or off, or they can be PWM dimmed to offer patterns within the LED matrix. The I2
C serial interface enables digital programming with 256:1 dimming ratios,
with or without the 11-bit resolution fade transition between the dimming states. Each switch can control and monitor a single LED or a segment of up to 16V of series-connected LEDs. In addition, the eight switches can be connected in parallel and/or in series to
bypass current around one or more LEDs in a string. When multiple LT3965s are used, the I2
C serial interface enables
communication between the master microcontroller and one or more LT3965s configured as slaves. Typical applications include
automotive matrix LED headlights, industrial lighting and large LED display lighting.

NEW RANGE OF DIN RAIL PCB HOUSING SUPPORTS
The new DIME/M range of high quality DIN rail PCB housing supports is suitable for PCBs measuring up to 72mm wide. Available from Hylec-APL, the modules can be clipped together, forming an open front DIN rail support for PCBs of between 20 and 177.5mm in length. Longer PCBs can be accommodated by adding extra base elements; and for boards carrying heavy components such as transformers and relays, separate foot elements can be used to provide extra support strength. These have thick wall sections with supporting ribs for added strength. PCB support is a built-in design feature via the end plates, and an improved clipping mechanism aids rigidity and simplifies assembly. End sections incorporating integral
feet, available for top hat rail designs, reduce assembly time. Separate feet are available that fit both G and top hat rail sections.

SURGE PROTECTION
Thanks to the use of Safe Energy Control (SEC) technology, the narrow Valvetrab-SEC type-2 surge protective device offers durability and high performance. Available from Phoenix Contact, the
disconnect device and high short-circuit current rating of up to 50kA offer protection for each small distribution panel at just 12mm per channel. This provides safe protection against severe voltage fluctuations and high stresses caused by lightning currents. In addition, downstream components experience less stress, thanks to the low voltage protection level; and main
DESIGNING LOW POWER WEARABLE DEVICES
A development platform for use in designing low-power wearable devices for consumers, has been launched by Lattice Semiconductor. Based on the iCE40 Ultra FPGA, this features sensors and peripherals, enabling its use for the design of a wide array of wearable devices. The iCE40 Ultra FPGA also supports a low power standby mode, making it a good choice for consumer wearables that need to operate for days between charges. Hardware features and sensors supported by
the iCE40 Ultra Wearable Development Platform include a 1.54in display, MEMS microphone, high-brightness LED, IR LED, BLE module and 32MB of flash
memory. The platform also supports sensors capable of measuring heart rate/SpO2
, skin
temperature and pressure, as well as an accelerometer and gyroscope. The platform comes in a wrist watch form factor (1.5in wide x 1.57in long x 0.87in high) with a wrist strap and a built in battery. Included with the platform are a detailed user guide and several demos to showcase parallel RGB to MIPI DSI bridging, health monitor, pedometer, IR transmitter or flashlight functions.
