KANSAS CITY SOUTHERN DANNY JOHNSTON

Merger Would Affect Meridian Speedway

Like the rest of the railroad industry, Kansas City Southern watching

the outcome of

is closely Canadian

Pacific’s overtures to acquire Norfolk Southern. Since NS and KCS are very closely tied through the Meridian Speedway LLC agreement, the impact to that specific part of the KCS is certainly something to consider. Norfolk Southern is directly responsible for approximately eight trains daily across the Meridian Speedway, and it is possible that any changes to the agreement could significantly affect traffic levels along this vital east-west corridor. Likewise,

changes to CP traffic patterns could alter the traffic flow along the KCS north-south mainline from Kansas City, Mo., to Mexico.

Louisiana Upgrades Kansas City Southern

recently

completed two large maintenance projects to help address capacity issues on the busy Shreveport to Meridian mainline in Louisiana. Near Simsboro, La., KCS installed several miles of new 136 pound welded rail and replaced an aging bridge in Tallulah, La. Both projects required KCS to delay traffic during daylight while work was being performed. By the last week of November, traffic patterns were returning to normal. The project culminated a $6.5 million investment by KCS in the Vickburg Division.

Washington Elevator Fire Destroys

The two eastern most grain elevators in the complex at Wilson Creek, Wash., caught fire on January 2. Pictured is the second of two westbound BNSF Railway intermodal trains that alerted the dispatcher and had the line closed so firefighters could fight the blaze. The old, metal clad wooden structures were a total loss, but firefighters worked through the afternoon to keep the fire from spreading. The BNSF line was open by the next day, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Kansas City Southern “Nord des Lignes”

With Kansas City Southern not operating anywhere near routes used by Canada’s VIA Rail, it’s not everyday you see a meet like this. Canadian National Train 529 with KCS No. 4610, No. 4147, and Norfolk Southern No. 6923 in the lead is stopped as VIA Train 55 passes by in Montreal, Que., on December 24, 2015. Train 529 originates on Norfolk Southern as Train 31T and becomes Canadian

Pacific 931 when

interchanged. CN picks it up at Rouses Point, N.Y., where it becomes Train 529.
