STEVE KRUEGER If Your Train’s on Time You Can Get to Work by Nine, 14x18”, Watercolor

It’s an early morning in June 1975 and No. 127 races along Penn Central’s Northeast Corridor just outside Kearny, N.J., after crossing the Hackensack River. Most of the folks who rode this ubiquitous Budd Silverliner to and from work are now retired. The painting was executed to jog memories from a period when commuting meant a time of quiet to read the newspaper, gently swaying with the car, planning the work day ahead.

SAMUEL ADAMS Virginian E-33s - A Vision of Modern Power, 18x24”, Watercolor

Beneath the Jefferson Street Bridge in Roanoke, Va., a pair of Virginian E-33 locomotives brings a trainload of coal in from the West Virginia mines served by the railroad. Wearing a bold, handsome livery, they present a vision of clean, modern technology. A friend of the artist, himself a Norfolk Southern locomotive engineer, suggested the E-33s as a subject. They are just the sort of painting Adams likes to render because he works mainly in watercolor and enjoys painting locomotives boldly and occupying center stage.
