here with Volume 7 (and hopefully with sev- eral more volumes to come). We start out with some really excellent
footage of some former Lehigh Valley pups (switchers) working the west end of Allentown (Pa.) Yard. One is in former LV paint and still has its dynamic brakes intact. We “locals” used to love seeing these units around, and so this was like seeing an old friend after a lot of years having passed. The sight and sound of those pups working hard under load helps to start this DVD off right. Next it’s a pair of former Erie Lackawanna

Grand Trunk Heritage
CLASSIC PHIL HASTINGS PHOTOGRAPHY
Journey with legendary photographer Phil Hastings as he takes us trackside in New England to witness steam’s last holdout on the old Grand Trunk. This Portland- to-Montreal segment was folded into the Canadian National in 1923, yet the Grand Trunk identity lasted into the late steam era. From heavy passenger trains to lowly peddler freights, Hastings was there to record it all.

GPs on a local followed by a ragtag mix of for- mer Penn Central units pulling a loaded ore train to the now-gone Bethlehem Steel mill in Bethlehem, Pa. As someone who cut his “rail- fan teeth” on the local area, this scene was especially poignant. It’s hard to imagine all the railroad infrastructure and heavy indus- try that have vanished in our local area, and the footage here really served as a reminder of how much has been lost over the past three and a half decades. We then visit Catasaqua, Pa., on the for-
mer Jersey Central as we watch Delaware & Hudson train NE84 moving at a really good clip and doing its all not to bounce off the tracks. Literally. The harmonic rocking from bad track has to be seen here to be believed. In the old days this was pretty much stan- dard on any line you railfanned — some of the trains really rocked along. One of the nicest little gems in this DVD
comes next: the chase of an Allentown-Sayre freight with a former Penn Central F7 lead- ing. Then it’s off to Palmerton as we watch two RS11s switch the yard with the long-gone New Jersey Zinc plant as a background. More and more good stuff follows — Dela-
ware & Hudson NE84 rolls under the high- way bridge at Walnutport that saw 50 rail- fans on it during this summer’s NKP 765 steam trips, hump operations at Allentown yard (with a whole lot of banging and slam- ming), D&H units switching at the long-gone former Reading Saucon Yard in Bethlehem, and more. The final scene is of an eastbound circus train rolling through Lehigh Gap with “Big Mike” promising us a further treat when Volume 8 comes out. Plenty of us northeast railroad fans will be
picking a copy of this DVD. John Pechulis has an excellent reputation around these parts and this title only adds to it. It shows a ton of operations and locations that are either no longer around or so completely changed as to be unrecognizable. If you aren’t from the area and/or couldn’t
care less about Conrail, this DVD is absolute- ly still for you with the wide variety of mo- tive power in all shapes and colors; train after train with colorful and graffiti-free rolling stock; and cabooses and switchers galore. It all adds up to a veritable “time machine” that shows just how much railroading has changed in just a few short years. John Pechulis puts his heart and soul into
making high quality, highly entertaining, and informative DVDs at a very fair price and it shows loud and clear here. I give this one two snaps and a twist for sure. — FRANK GARON
