MARC DESOBEAU Le Capitole, First Class at 200 Klicks, 16x20”, Acrylic
History being made — It is the late 1960s, and the French National Railways’ (SNCF) Le Capitole is making its way through the countryside on its trip between Toulouse and Paris. Le Capitole will reach speeds of 200 k.p.h., which makes it the first French train to travel at that speed. The locomotive is a BB9200 class and the train’s only available fare is First Class.
JAMES MANN
General Electric Milwaukee Road Class EP-2 Locomotive, 12x14”, Watercolor
The General Electric EP-2 is representative of those fully electric locomotives that were in limited production, are unique in design, and are preserved in a museum to be visited today. Aesthetically, the orange-red-and-black Milwaukee Road paint scheme is very dramatic. When applied over the contrasting shapes of the EP-2 bodywork, punctuated by the pantographs and articulated chassis, the composite is impressive. That it also produced nearly 4,500 h.p. in 1919 merely underscores its physical presence. For the artist, the technical roots of painting, founded in the heavy detail of his illustrations of proposed architectural structures, have slowly given way over the years to bursts of spontaneity and light.
