10.9 Day Shooting Suit Giveaway From McKenna Shooting Sports

During our 10.9 Day (Oc-

tober 9) celebration, McK- enna Shooting Sports gen- erously donated a junior shooting suit to be given away to an athlete who told us about his/her 10.9 jour- ney in a short essay – What are they doing to become better at our sport? Who has helped them? Who do they look up to? With more entries re-

ceived than we could have dreamed of, 12-year-old Clayton Peay of Spicewood, Texas (pictured) was se- lected as the winner! Here’s Clayton’s winning entry: “My name is Clayton Peay and I’m 12. I love shooting because it is fun, you will like it if you try it. I have been in shooting sports for 4 years at our local 4-H. This is my second year shooting inter- mediate.

I currently shoot

with an Anschutz 1903J on loan from our club. I am get- ting all my gear together one piece at a time. Before I started shooting

I played baseball with the local league. I attended a local 4-H meeting and they asked for people to sign up for shooting sports. They only had a few spots left and I lucked out and got placed. I began with prone position DQG P\ À UVW HYHU VFRUH ZDV 9 on 50 feet. Today it’s an 87!

Practice a lot so you can

get better. Practice at home mentally, is just as good as the range. Your mind men-

tally prepares the shot and it helps with muscle memory. Take your time with shoot- ing; some days are bad some days are good. You must give it 100 percent ev- ery time. It’s not about the perfect practice, but the per- fect effort.

Mom and dad help a lot,

and my coach. The rest is up to me.

Currently, my

future just focuses on one match at a time. Ultimately, I would like to be a part of a XQLYHUVLW\ ULÁ H WHDP DQG WKH Olympics. The person I look up to a lot would be my dad. He’s at every practice and he studies everything about shooting sports, he’s full of information and guidance.” Shawn McKenna, own-

er of McKenna Shooting Sports, donated the suit in honor of one of his mentors. “Jim Starr was one of the

few men I had the honor to have in my life,” McKenna said. “He was always will- ing to give anything to let you see your true potential. Jim spent countless hours and money allowing me to develop into the man I am today, both in shooting and in life and I will never forget that. Jim’s legacy is that a ju- nior’s journey is one of great importance and is always worth supporting.” Congrats to Clayton and

thank you to McKenna Shooting Sports!
