CAR MANUFACTURER ACHIEVES TATK TIME WITH PNEUMATIC OVERHEAD LIFTING SOLUTION A UK-based car manufacturer has successfully improved production line safety and achieved its takt time following the installation of an Advanced Handling pneumatic overhead lifting system with bespoke manipulator to handle multiple parts. The manufacturer approached Advanced Handling with a production line manual handling issue involving lifting car exhausts weighing approximately 20kg. These were required to be lifted from

their storage racking and placed opposite in a restricted space within a distance of a few metres. The second key requirement was to ensure the equipment supported their takt time of 70 seconds. As an established material handling
solution provider working with global aerospace and automotive manufacturers; energy providers; food and drink, pharmaceutical, healthcare and retailers, Advanced Handling’s managing director Mike Prince explains: “Understanding our customer’s production process is paramount to us finding a suitable and reliable solution. It’s our standard process to visit our customer’s site to fully comprehend the application in its actual environment and for us then to recommend a solution that will work with existing and future processes.” An overhead handling system was proposed for this customer to create a
flexible solution that would handle and turn within a limited area and maintain a consistent workflow to achieve the takt time. The design involved a pneumatic tool from the overhead handling solutions available from Advanced Handling. The installed MechLift operates fixed to an overhead rail profile system which delivers a smooth, gliding movement.

Soon after the customer had approved the technical specifications Advanced Handling manufactured the CE marked lifting device onsite and tested before installation. “An overhead lifting solution has multiple benefits in large and small scale production lines including enhancing the ergonomic flow of the process,” comments product manager Rebecca Dilloway-Jones. “In this specific solution the operator force was 2kg, allowing the lifting equipment to carry the weight and manage the rotation and precision placement of the exhausts.” Post installation the car manufacturer has experienced direct benefits to their production line including an increase in speed and the result of achieving their takt time. The engineers are not feeling fatigued and health and safety risks have been reduced significantly. Overhead lifting system demonstrations and other supporting handling solutions will be on the Advanced Handling stand H86 at the PPMA Show 2015, NEC Birmingham.
