Chalkface

Shortlist triumph The night are drawing in, many have returned from their summer hols so that means it is autumn which means in turn that the E-Learning Awards are drawing near. 2015 looks set to be another cracking year with the number of submissions breaking all records. Congratulations to everyone who made it to the short list. The fi rst hurdle has been safely negotiated and, although there is a long way to go, you are probably allowed a little day dream of picking up a prize at the E-Learning Awards Gala evening on 25th November.

It’s low tech up north While some children are experiencing interactive periodic tables and virtual walk-throughs of WW1 trenches at school to help them learn, more than half are experiencing a low-tech education similar to that of their parents. The survey by IT company Daisy found clear regional divides with

regards to the use of ICT in secondary education. In the south of England more than half of children (56%) say the internet is only used occasionally in lessons. In the north of England this rises to 71%. That’s a whopping variation. The reason for this disparity is, according to Daisy, too many of those in charge of procuring IT don’t have the expertise. Whether that is in any way down to the north/ south divide we’re not told.

Sparking ideas Hat’s off to price comparison site Business Electric for doing an exhaustive study of energy saving ideas in the workplace. For instance who knew turning off your computer at the end of the day, or when you head off for lunch, could save up to £35 a year? Or that using screensavers actually wastes more energy than turning screen off and on again. But Chalkface was particularly struck with the idea that when your computer starts to play up demand a new one because the metal on

your desk is probably energy ineffi cient anyway. But the best green tip is to make your colleagues a cuppa. It not only wins you friends, but also reduces the overall energy used compared to making one cup of tea at a time. Instead of fi lling the kettle every time you want a cup of tea or coffee, boiling only what is needed could save £7 over the year. OK not mega bucks but every little helps. And not sure how it works for those many e-learners who toil away in virtual teams but it’s still a nice idea.

Productive research…or not Of the many emails that fi nd their way to Chalkface, we were intrigued to read one that noted that a study had found UK business waste over billions a year on ineffective and unproductive research. All very serious stuff. Chalkface will leave its readers to decide whether such a study fell into the productive or unproductive category…
