Charlotte Smith, strategic business and marketing consultant (Class of 2012-13) Charlotte Smith was head of employment at Travlaw during her 30 Under 30 tenure. She specialised in marketing and product development alongside her regular legal work, and top of her achievements was an online employment and HR product, designed specifically with the travel industry in mind. Nine months after her year with


the 30 ended, she was offered a partnership at Travlaw. “At the same time my husband was offered an amazing role in California, so we had an incredibly difficult decision to make,” she says. They settled on California, and


Charlotte took the move as a platform launch her own consultancy business, specialising in strategic marketing and business consultancy. She divides her workload between


UK and US projects. In the UK, she has helped put together the Travel Media Awards website – a new event, plus assisted other travel industry


is fertile ground for those types of clients, and her networking is paying off: “A year down the line I feel like I’m getting there, and the US side is thriving as much as the UK side.” While there are benefits to living


in California, notably better weather and an outdoor lifestyle, she does admit to missing the London way of life, and makes a return visit every quarter for business. Being a Tomorrow’s Travel Leader is


a vital part of her CV, and she’s grateful for the positive mentorship it provided: “It’s great to support people

Paul Paddock, insurance product, performance and pricing lead, Holiday Extras (Class of 2012-13) When Paul Paddock was part of the inaugural 30 Under 30, he worked as insurance product manager at Holiday Extras. Three years down the line his role has expanded, and he now manages underwriter and broker relationships, in addition to his


original remit of products, pricing and aggregator relationships. Admitting he’s not one to shy away


from putting his hand up to take new tasks, he’s also been lucky to have a champion at Holiday Extras watching over his career: “Howard Dove, our operations director, has been a good mentor. He’s set me new challenges and trusted me to get on with it.” Biggest of these was taking on a


management role, something Paul previously had no experience of: “Coming from a more commercial focus, I had to learn to be more patient. The prospect of being an agony uncle and dealing with everyone’s personal problems was daunting. But it’s been rewarding, finding that more sympathetic person inside of me and helping my direct reports to develop. I started with four people, and now I have seven, so I can’t be too bad a manager!” Two years on from his 30 Under 30

experience, he says a lot of the advice he was given still rings true: “I took little snippets away from all the sessions,” he says. “Five or six years ago, people didn’t take me seriously [in a professional sense] because of my age, so to see some of the industry’s most senior directors listening to young people and instilling them with self-belief was really inspirational.”
