Annual lecture to give outsider’s perspective
THE INSTITUTE of Travel & Tourism is aiming to shake up the travel industry with the launch of its new ITT Lecture. Chairman Steven Freudmann
said the annual event would see someone from outside the industry invited to speak about the business of travel. By encouraging them not to pull
any punches, he is also hoping the events will become forums for new ideas thanks to the different perspective on offer. Freudmann said: “The Odyssey

“We hope that it will be the first
of many annual lectures.” Freudmann said the two-hour
event had been designed to include a Q&A section, allowing the audience to give their own feedback as well as deepen the conversation. He added that the speaker at the

views about where our industry gets it right and wrong, and was an advisor to Tony Blair.” He added that Taylor proved
to be one of the most popular speakers at the conference and Freudmann was confident he would be so again.
Comment Claire Steiner: ‘Future You shows the benefit of working with education’
As a seasoned HR professional, I have recruited hundreds of people into our industry, but also seen the struggle that travel and tourism companies can have in encouraging young people.
THAT IS why it is so important to work with education to promote our sector as one offering an amazing variety of jobs, a professional career and a lot of fun. The ITT education and training committee works hard to provide opportunities to do this. The success of our Future You
initiative shows the benefit of working with colleges and universities. We have collaborated with more than 80 organisations this academic year, reaching some 1,500 students across the UK. Plans are

already under way for next year’s events, visiting leading tourism universities across the UK and holding our annual flagship Future You at WTM. The Global Travel and Tourism
Partnership (GTTP), which works with ITT in the UK, is supported by some of the biggest global names in travel, with nearly two million young people from 12 different countries having taken part. Like the ITT, the GTTP focuses on
fostering future talent and promoting careers in travel and tourism, and I hope that many more companies join. We are also delighted to continue to support TTG’s Tomorrow’s Travel Leaders, highlighting the rising stars of the sector. Finally, at the ITT summer party last month we celebrated the
best emerging talent at the annual ITT Student Awards, and my sincere congratulations go out to this year’s deserving winners. If you would like to get involved in any of our initiatives, please get in touch. Claire Steiner is chair of the ITT Education & Training Committee
