Youth write in their Proclaim Story journals during their synod day.
At the Lutheran Disaster Response booth, youth learn what it’s like to be a refugee. In this picture, they have 60 seconds to decide the three most important things they’ll take with them as they fl ee their home to safety.
At the Lutheran Campus Ministry builds booth, Alicia Carlson (left) and Caitlyn Bell, St. Philip Lutheran Church in Raleigh, N.C., help build houses that will become Habitat for Humanity homes for Detroit area families.
Participants experience what it’s like to transport a 5-gallon jug of water one- tenth of a mile through ELCA World Hunger’s Walk for Water. The simulation was shorter than the average 3.7 miles women in Africa walk daily to retrieve water for their families. At presstime, ELCA members had raised $402,000 for World Hunger supported-water projects this year.
After their service day, Jessica Short (left) and Bridget Lovejoy’s group from St. Martin Lutheran Church in Archbold, Ohio, returned to their hotel to fi nd a note from the maid, who had found inspiring their Post-it notes from their Final 15 Bible study on the wall. “She thanked us for making her day better. We had been making a difference that day and didn’t even know it,” Lovejoy said.
