Holden Village evacuated T

he Wolverine fire, which by Aug. 4 had consumed 25,000 acres of timber, caused

Holden Village to be evacuated. Holden, a former mining village, is a Lutheran retreat center in eastern Washington. High temperatures and low

humidity provided ideal condi- tions for active fire behavior. The forest fire began three miles north- west of Lucerne, Wash., on June 29 by lightning, according to the U.S. Forest Service incident report. A July 31 update on the vil-

lage’s Facebook page indicated that although Holden was not in danger, the fire was moving toward Lucerne with the potential to block road access. A level 3 evacuation notice was issued, and 300 people,

including villagers and contractors working to remediate the mine, were moved down the mountain. A small crew that initially stayed

behind to keep an eye on the village was evacuated Aug. 2 due to a road being blocked and for their safety. Before leaving, the crew activated sprinklers and prepped build- ings. Operations at Holden Village and the Holden Mine Remedia- tion were suspended until further notice. In early August, notices of

“Holden Evening Prayer” and “Prayer Around the Cross,” both popular worship services at Holden, were being held in many locations (at churches in Washing- ton, and beyond) in solidarity with the village.

Immigration move ELCA leaders and Lutheran Immi- gration and Refugee Service (LIRS) in July expressed gratitude for a move by the Obama administration to begin releasing some detained moth- ers and children seeking asylum in the U.S. “The release of mothers and children from detention centers aligns us as a country with our truer self,” Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton said. “We have always been a people who provide refuge for those seeking asylum.” In a July 13 news release, Linda Hartke, LIRS president and CEO, wrote: “Children do not belong in jails—nor do their mothers who have acted only to protect their very lives. Detention is inherently traumatic and damaging, especially for people who have fled persecution and violence in search of safety.”
