Theologian ousted
The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod in July ousted from its clergy roster Matthew Becker, professor of theology at Valparaiso [Ind.]Uni- versity, carrying out what various members consider the equivalent of a modern-day heresy conviction, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Becker previously raised questions about the denomination’s stance against the ordination of women, as well as its teaching of creationism. LCMS members filed charges against Becker, triggering multiple investiga- tions. “My imminent expulsion from the synod has saddened me, since this church body that has been my spiritual home for nearly 53 years will no longer be that,” wrote Becker in his blog. He also wrote that he would investigate the process for becoming rostered in the ELCA.
