‘We love God and that’s all that’s needed.’
Definitely-Abled Youth Leadership Event
DAYLE participants live with a wide range of physical, cognitive and emotional abili- ties. Their activities centered on the theme “Crossing Together.”
Matt Kowalik (top left), Good Samaritan Lutheran Church, Lexington Park, Md., danced to Gangnam Style at the DAYLE talent show. Morgan Sanchez (top right), Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sedro Woolley, Wash., loved the prayer stations at DAYLE. Participants created clay art, wrote messages and did other activities to “remember people who you would like to pray for, and you pray out loud or softly.”
Twins Kelly and Kevin Rayner, 18, from Bethel Lutheran Church, St. Claire Shores, Mich., attended DAYLE together, Kevin as a participant and Kelly as a volunteer. “What I’ve learned here is that faith isn’t complicated. Faith is just knowing and just being,” Kelly said. “These kids say: We love God and that’s all that’s needed.”
Ryan Frisella, St. Andrew Lutheran Church in San Diego, enjoys the joint clos- ing worship service for MYLE and DAYLE. The college graduate returned to DAYLE to speak after attending as a teen. “It’s important youth know they are strong people just like everybody else,” said Frisella, describing DAYLE participants. “They want to be leaders in the church and they can all do it.”
