group worth $1,309 and the aggres- sive group bringing $1,280 per head. While Cooke and Bohnert proved
that temperament and the resulting reproductive efficiency could be helped through acclimation when cattle are young, achieving that improvement is time-consuming and labor intensive.
Certifi ed Hereford Beef: a cut above The Certified Hereford Beef
(CHB) program began as an AHA marketing initiative, based on the fi ndings of more than 3 years of re- search at Colorado State University that proved the superior eating qual- ity and consistency of Hereford beef. To qualify for the CHB program,
cattle must meet live and carcass specifi cations including a predomi- nately (51 percent) whiteface and exhibit traditional white markings of a Hereford or Hereford/English crossbred — thus qualifying straight Hereford cattle, black baldies and red baldies for the program. The goal of CHB LLC is to drive
the demand for Hereford and Her- eford/English baldy feeder cattle through an alliance of feeders, pro- cessors, distributors, retailers and food service providers. For more information about Certifi ed Her- eford Beef, visit
HerefordBeef.org. “Hereford Marketplace” at Her-
eford.org is a free, online marketing tool where producers can list feeder cattle and commercial females. Effi cient gains, less time on feed,
superior reproductive performance, effi cient growth, carcass accept- ability, adequate milk, gentle dis- position and adaptability — that is today’s Hereford. To learn more about the breed,
