PECIAL THANKS THIS MONTH GO TO ANGIE STUMP DENTON AND THE AMERICAN Hereford Association (AHA). She was a tremendous help in gather- ing photos and articles for our annual Hereford issue. It is always a
pleasure to work with such professional and talented colleagues. You’ll fi nd a sample of Denton’s work in the article “Selfl ess Service”
about General Butch Funk, Spearhead Ranch, Copperas Cove. Her article highlights the good work that members are doing by pro-
viding performance data on their entire herds to beef breed associations. There is a cost to this data gathering, but many producers of registered
cattle count it a small cost when compared to the overall gains in genetic information on their cattle and their beef breed. In the Ranching department, fi nd the “Texas Range Report,” provided
by a team of USDA Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) range professionals. Regardless of the region, nearly all the range specialists temper the
good news of rain and grass with a caution to be on guard against wildfi re when conditions turn dry. They offer some good advice on early preparations now that might help
contain a fi re later. Be sure to check the calendar in this issue and in the coming months.
The schedule is about to get busy again with fall sales, seminars and fi eld days, stellar educational events like the Beef Cattle Short Course at Texas A&M University, College Station, and with a slew of TSCRA ranch gather- ings. Thanks to Curtis Younts and Claude Koontz, chair and vice chair of the Association Promotion Committee, dozens of ranch gatherings will be hosted this fall by generous TSCRA members and sponsors. There will be something new on the calendar for Wednesday, Sept.
23 to Friday, Sept. 25. We are enhancing the traditional fall meeting and developing it into the TSCRA Policy Conference. As of this writing, the agenda was being developed. Watch for more details at
