PROMOTIONAL PRODUCTS Scrum down for the summer

It’s shaping up to be another great summer of sport, not just on the world stage, but in the form of promotional products too. Promotional products commentator STUART DERRICK explores.

T

he Lionesses, the England womenʼs football team came a creditable third in the World Cup in Canada recently – the countryʼs best performance since 1966, and all that. While Chris Froome has done the double with his second Tour de France win. Actually, Iʼm taking a bit of a punt on the last one – publishing deadlines being what they are, it is not a forgone conclusion at the time of writing. If Iʼm correct though, next monthʼs column may be in peril as Iʼll be living la vida loca on my winnings. Otherwise, same time, same place.

One thing that isnʼt in doubt is that one of the worldʼs biggest sporting events is taking place on these shores in a couple of months. More than two million tickets have been snapped up for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, which will see 20 teams competing around the country at 13 stadia over six weeks. Itʼs going to be great – no problematic time differences requiring you to watch matches in the middle of the night, and a great spread of venues taking the rugby carnival from Exeter in the West Country to St Jamesʼ Park in Newcastle. For companies looking to join in the excitement, 14 Promotions has a range of rugby related items from full size rugby balls to more fun size ones for an informal throwabout. Other merchandise includes kicking tees for fun rugby competitions, rugby ball keyrings and rugby USB sticks.

If youʼre after inflatables though, youʼll be blown away by Just Ballsʼ latest boast. It is pleased to announce it has (snort) the biggest balls in the industry. Beach balls that is, you filthy lot. The inflatable monsters swell up to an impressive 107mm circumference providing more branding area for clients, who will clearly be bouncing with joy at the results.

TowelUp Holiday essentials If summer is a time for lollies, itʼs also a

time for going off on your holibobs, so a couple of merchandise picks have caught my eye this month. First up is the TowelUp, which might basically be described as a large paper clip for your towel. It is the brainchild of Hannah Landless who was frustrated at not being able to move freely and have two hands available when wrapped in a towel. She developed the plastic clip to help out, and the rest looks like being history. As well as being a retail item, the clip

Rugby crowds are also renowned for their thirst, so Sweet Temptationsʼ latest product will definitely appeal. The confectioner has gone a bit off-piste with a range of brandable wines and beers. It can supply mini 18.7cl bottles of cabernet shiraz or sauvignon blanc in bottles that sport a fully customised front label. Beer drinkers can enjoy a 33cl of traditionally brewed pilsner replete with its own corporate message.

Quench your thirst Of course, there is more than one way

Thereʼs no sign of the traditional inflatable sheep however, which is slightly odd as a mascot for the Rugby World Cup is Aardman Animationʼs adorable Shaun the Sheep. The character is being used in various promotional guises to try and introduce a younger audience to the joys of cauliflower ears and rude songs. Itʼs not a baaa-d idea.

to quench your thirst, and as temperatures soar this summer (okay, Iʼm in predictive mode again), what better way to cool off than with a lovely lolly. Lickalix is a company that makes natural, healthy ice lollies. For those of us brought up on E-numbers and Fabs, that might sound a bit worthy, but think again. Lickalix uses whole fruit for its tasty ices and has devised some crazy flavours to boot, such as Mango Lassi, Strawberry Pineapple Punch, Beetroot, Carrot and Orange, and many more. It also has a range of Poptails, which are frozen cocktails, so you can suck on a Banana Daiquiri, Peach Whiskey, Pimms Oʼclock or Grapefruit Gin Sling to name a few.

Oldeani’s Lift Off Luggage Strap

Another holiday related item that could come in very handy is Oldeaniʼs Lift Off Luggage Strap, which combines a handy luggage strap to keep your belongings safe with a very useful built in digital scale. Anybody who has been threatened with a hefty excess baggage charge at check in will know that starting your break on your knees discarding clothing items from a suitcase does not engender the holiday spirit. With the luggage strap scale you can make the flight confident that youʼll make the weight.

can be produced in a corporate colour. It can be branded with four-colour or adorned with a removable sticker that can be clear, metallic with dimensions of 3cm by 2cm. A double-sided swing tag can also be personalised in full colour. With both of my hands free, I can therefore give Hannah a round of applause for such a simple but effective idea.
