news DSM targets new USBs

Engineering resins firm DSM said its Stanyl and Stanyl ForTii high performance polyamides have been approved for use in the next generation of USB Type-C connectors. USB is now the industry

standard bus for transferring data and power between electronic devices with some 5bn ports produced every year. The new Type-C connector will become obligatory in 2017 in Europe as part of a charging interface standardisation to help control electronic waste. The USB Type-C connector features a reversible design

allowing it to function perfectly whether it is plugged in right-side up or upside down (a drawback with current directional designs). Moreover, wall thickness of just 25% of that on previous generations saves space and material. DSM said Stanyl and Stanyl

ForTii can be used to produce connectors with wall thick- nesses as thin as 0.12 mm High flow in combination with

high weld-line strength ensure the required high pin pull-out strength while parts success- fully pass durability tests involving mating and unmating more than 10,000 times. The resins also offer CTI values of greater than 400V and provide UL94 V-0 performance without halogens. ❙ www.dsmep.com
