Selective laser sintering As previously noted, selective laser sintering, with its use of very fi ne powders, does not lend itself to the use of fi bre reinforced plastics. Solvay Engineering Plastics has taken an alternative route in its development of higher-strength SLS materials. It recently added a 40% glass-bead-fi lled grade of its range of Sinterline polyamide 6 powders. It says the new material meets a growing demand for higher-performance rapid prototyping and low-volume series applications, with a focus on engineering plastics applications in automotive under-the-hood components, electrical and consumer goods. Sinterline is based on the same resin chemistry as

Solvay’s established Technyl polyamides for injection moulding. Solvay says it delivers prototyping parts with functional properties “and bridges the gap between visual prototyping and injection moulded PA6 or PA66 components.” In addition to superior mechanical performance under demanding thermal conditions, the 40% rein- forced grade exhibits a tensile modulus of 6,300 MPa at 23°C, combined with a low porosity level of only 1.8%,

without compromising the surface aspect and resolu- tion delivered by unfi lled Sinterline. “Solvay is focusing on 3D-printed functional

prototypes and our customers want to obtain parts made with the reinforced grade which provides higher mechanical and thermal properties versus parts produced with PA12,” says Dominique Giannotta, Sinterline project leader at Solvay Engineering Plastics – PA12 is probably the most widely used polyamide in AM applications.
